Week of: March 4th through March 8th

 &nbsp;This week, we're wrapping up with conflict.&nbsp; There are four types of conflict: 1. character vs. character- The Lorax vs. Once-ler 2. character vs. self- The Once-ler felt guilty on one hand for ruining the Lorax' home, but on the other hand, he wanted to grow bigger. 3. character vs. nature- The Once-ler vs. Truffula Trees 4. character vs. society- Once-ler vs. Lorax' society 
Setting- where and when a story takes place
- the time and place
- setting sometimes has to be inferred based on what we read in the text
&nbsp;&nbsp; Ex: Mae wore petticoats and took a horse to town, so I think it must be during the late 1800s or early 1900s.
 
Character- answers the who in the story
- we can infer a lot about characters based on how they feel, how they look, what they think, what they do, and what they say
- refer to your notes for specifics on this
 
Plot- this is what happens in the story
- plot has 5 parts in the shape of a mountain
1. Exposition- the beginning
- introduces the characters, setting, and background
2. Rising Action- starts to get good
- here, a problem is introduced
3. Climax- the peak of the mountain; the turning point; OMG moment!
- this is the most exciting part of the story that makes you gasp
- the character has to make a decision about how to handle the problem
4. Falling Action- this is where we head back down the mountain
- the story starts to come to a close
- we see the consequences of the climax
5. Resolution- the end
- the story is wrapped up
- problems are resolved
 
Theme- the central message that the author is trying to convey
- can be viewed as a lesson or a moral as well
- ask yourself, "What is the author trying to tell me?"&nbsp; 
- think of "Making Music" from the magazine we read.&nbsp; Remember, we decided that the theme is probably that "you should be determined and never give up" or "follow your heart and your dreams."&nbsp;
