This will be my tenth year to teach school. After graduating from Union
University in 2000, I took a job teaching at Haywood Elementary School. I
taught first and second grade there. Once I became a mom for the second
time, I decided to pursue a job in Jackson because it was closer to where we
lived. I taught Kindergarten at Lincoln Magnet School for three years,
in which time I earned a Master's Degree in curriculum (with a 4.0, baby!)
also from Union. My husband and I decided to move to Medina, and I obtained
this job. I am so thrilled to be here and teach in this special place. I
am tickled to be back in first grade!
I am married to Mark, who is a firefighter for the city of Jackson, and I
have 2 great kids, who are in third grade and Kindergarten here at Medina
Elementary.
My philosophy is that all children can learn. They can learn to be self-
directed and responsible for their own learning.
They also have a right to expect to be treated with respect and dignity. I
base my philosophy on the following set of beliefs:
Children are in school to learn. I have a deep commitment to my students and
their learning and express my commitment by being encouraging and
enthusiastic about them as individuals and what they are learning.
Learning is what school is all about. Children learn social skills as well
as academic skills in school. It is important to me to be aware of
individual uniqueness and encourage students to recognize and respect each
other's unique qualities. I believe children learn in different ways and at
different rates and consider it my responsibility to find ways that are best
for each individual.
Learning is a life-long process that enriches our lives. Learning takes
place at home first, and parents are their children's first teachers. Parent
support of their children's learning is of primary importance. Parents
continue to play a vital role throughout their children's lives. It is my
belief that learning in school will be successful if parents are involved in
their children's learning and are enthusiastic about learning themselves.
Cooperation is a basic skill. I believe that teaching children to work
cooperatively is essential to their future success as adults. Cooperative
learning strategies will be used in the classroom to foster the development
of this necessary social skill.
I believe all children can learn. In order to learn, children need the
school, the parents, and the teacher working together in a collaborative
atmosphere. It is my hope that parents will be active participants in the
classroom, and will contact me through a phone call or, my favorite, a note
in their child's planner, whenever they have a question or concern and enjoy
the school year!
