Library Policy

Gibson County School District
Library Policy

The following rules apply to all materials housed in the school library:

1. Upon receipt of a complaint regarding any library materials or
resources, a formal statement will be required of the one making the
complaint. This formal statement will be in the form of a prepared
questionnaire attached to these rules. After receipt of the formal
statement, this complaint will then be referred to a committee made up of the
principal, the guidance counselor, and a member of the English/Reading staff,
the superintendent, and the librarian. The complainant will then be allowed
to come before this committee prior to the taking of any action. Retention
or withdrawal will be mandated by the school board.

2. Selection of books and materials is made based upon the
recommendations found in any of the following journals and publications:
Booklist, School Library Journal, Library Journal, Wilson Library Bulletin,
Senior High School Library Catalog, Middle and Junior High School Library
Catalog, Children's Catalog, and Accelerated Reader Booklist. Likewise,
requests for materials by teachers will be considered adequate
recommendation. Selection is made in conjunction with ALA's Library Bill of
Rights (attached to this document.)

3. Any gift books are accepted enthusiastically with the stipulation
that they are not to be recalled by the donor at a later date. Futhermore,
discretion will be left up to the librarian as to whether or not to place
these materials out for student use.

	4. Discarding or weeding of any materials will be done on the basis
of
	     the following criteria:

(1) Superseded editions if not needed for historical collections.
(2) Duplicates of periodicals
(3) Periodicals not indexed in Readers' Guide

5. If the librarian feels that for any reason any materials might best be
suited for use upon request only, it will be her preogative to place these
materials on closed stacks, which will then be accessible at the discretion
of the librarian, and/or upon request by a student for such materials. Such
closed stacks specifically apply to valuable books, reference books, or books
censored for any reason.

6. All students must have an authorization use policy on file with the
school before accessing the Internet.

7. General rules regarding fines, lost books, and check-outs are
