Announcements

Welcome to Meigs Middle School.  We will have an exciting time in 5th grade!  
I will be your child's Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies teacher 
during this school year.  

Students may arrive at school at 7:30 am.  They are to go to the gym until 
7:45 at which time they will be dismissed to their homeroom classes.

January 28, 2010 - Students should be finishing The Thief Lord tonight.  We 
have been working in class on our 100 Point projects and students have given 
me a list of their project choices.  The spelling test is tomorrow.  Social 
Studies Fair project information has been sent home.  Those projects will be 
due March 22.

January 19, 2010 - Students will need to complete the Social Studies Chapter 
5 Review by tomorrow. Also, any field trip permission forms and monies need 
to be turned in by Wednesday, Manuary 20th.

January 15, 2010 - Students do not report to school on Monday in observance 
of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  There is a new project information sheet 
going home total for reading.  We will have a goal setting sheet next week 
for students to complete.  Students need to begin reading 3 chapters per day 
in The Thief Lord.

January 13, 2010 - There is a new link to a writing contest posted in 
the "Links" sections.  Your student may choose to enter this contest.  Also, 
students may enter submissions to the Meigs Scene.  Entry forms are 
downstairs next to Ms. Searfoss's door.

January 12, 2010 - Field trip permission forms were sent home today for the 
Jan. 26 performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank".  Please sign the form and 
return it with your child's $11 fee before Tuesday, January 19th.

January 5 - Happy New Year!  It was good to see everyone today.  This week's
spelling words come from Unit 19.  We are beginning a new novel this week. 
Students will be reading The Thief Lord and completing related assignments.

Dec. 16 - Thanks for all of the help with our Centennial Exposition. Many of 
you came to help or sent in items for us.  The students had an amazing day 
and we couldn't have done it without you!

Also, thanks for all that you did for our Ross Elementary family.  Ms 
Bucchino came and shared that you all created a wonderful Christmas for our 
family.  

Nov. 20 - Thank you for the new books for our classroom. We received 5 of the 
books on my wishlist!  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

We have finished our Sound the Jubilee book and students have been given a 
study guide to complete over the weekend.  Our final test will be on Monday.
Students will not have a Spelling test next week but will have the Unit 16 
test on Friday, Dec. 4th.  Student do report to school on Monday and Tuesday.

Nov. 13 - Spaghetti Supper and Talent Show
Book Fair will be open until 7 pm.

Nov. 9-13 BOOK FAIR

Nov. 9 - There is an contest posted on my links page for students. We will be 
entering this contest for our November/December Book Share.  I will be 
providing classroom lessons in preparation for the contest.  Look for more 
information over the next two weeks.
 
Oct. 29 - We have been enjoying the October Book Shares!  Many of the 
students have worked hard and their enthusiasm is contagious.  I appreciate 
their efforts and we will finish these on Monday.  

Thank you to all who have been willing to furnish things for our behavior 
incentive celebration tomorrow.  You can send in your items with your child 
tomorrow morning.  I appreciate your willingness to help us with the October 
festivities!

On Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, we will have our pictures made for the Centennial 
Exposition passports.   Students may bring shawls, hats, overcoats, or 
anything that they would like to put on for their picture as an immigrant to 
America.

Oct. 26 - Welcome back to school!  I hope everyone had a relaxing Fall Break 
and that our students are ready to learn and dig a little deeper.  Our 
Spelling test this week will be over unit 11.  The Book Share Mystery Bags 
are due Oct. 28th and the presentations will begin that day, too.  We will 
have a writing assessment this week to look at where the students are in 
regard to our 6 + 1 Traits of Writing focus.  We will be working on Ideas and 
Content as well as Organization.  

Friday we will have a celebration of Fall as our monthly incentive as part of 
our school-wide discipline plan.  Our room parents may be calling you to help 
furnish snacks, drinks, or other items.  Thanks for your help!

Oct. 14 - Thank you to those of you who have sent in hand sanitizer.  We have 
enough to last us for a while thanks to your generosity.  I particularly 
liked the personalized label for "Ms. Buckner's Extraordinary Clean Hands 
Potion"! Thank you for helping us try to stay as germ free as possible!

Many of you have returned the H1N1 Flu forms.  Please return those forms by 
Oct. 15 so we can get the accurate number of vaccines or mists for the 
students.  

Our Spelling test over Unit 10 is tomorrow.  These words are more challenging 
and we have discussed in class the importance of knowing the meanings of 
these 
words. 

Students report to school a for a full day on Thursday but do not report to 
school on Friday.  I hope all of you have a wonderful Fall Break and that the 
students return to school rested and ready for our next 9 weeks!

Oct. 8 - The H1N1 flu shot/mist information was sent home today.  Please 
complete and return the accept/decline information and return the form to 
school.
We have finished our Civil War Leaders packet and made study cards 
to prepare students for the quiz on Tuesday, Oct. 13th.  Students should be 
reading the fact side of the card and trying to remember which leader the 
fact or facts refer to on the card.  Book Shares are on-going and the 
Spelling test is tomorrow.

We have had several parents sign up to donate blood.  Thank you for giving to 
the Red Cross so generously!

Oct. 6 - The first page of the Civil War Leaders packet was given to Block 1 
and Block 2 will receive pages 1 and 2 tomorrow.  Please have your child 
review the underlined information.  Also, the Book Share signature portion of 
the page is due on Friday.  Students have been selecting books from the Meigs 
library and have through Friday to choose their books.  Students who have 
selected their books should begin reading and finding clues to record on the 
graphic organizer.If you plan to purchase pictures, please return all orders 
by Friday, Oct. 9th.

Oct. 5 - We took a "Causes of the Civil War" quiz today.  I am sending them 
home tonight to be signed and returned.  Also, students need to be sure that 
they have read Chapter 3, Lesson 2 in Social Studies and Chapter 2 in Sound 
the Jubilee.  Some students in the first block may not have finished the 
Spelling assignment.

Oct. 2 - Our Unit 9 Spelling Test will be on Friday, Oct. 9.  Students who 
did not finish their Chapter 3 Reading Guide for Lesson 1 need to complete it 
over the weekend and turn it in on Monday.  Please remind your child to bring 
their ID badge and agenda each day.  Have a lovely weekend!

Oct. 1 - Remember to remind your child to study for our spelling test on Unit
8 tomorrow!  Also, we will have a quiz over the Causes of the Civil War packet
on Monday.  Sound the Jubilee, our new novel study, was assigned today. 
Students were asked to read the preface and chapter 1.  After reading, student
need to make a list of characters with descriptions for class tomorrow.  Most
students had time to complete these in class today.

Sept. 28 - Information about the Red Cross Blood Drive was sent home today. 
Mark your calendars for Nov. 5th and come to Meigs that day and give!

Sept. 22 - We continued our lessons using Cornell notetaking and began to 
look at the differences between search engines and databases.  Students now 
have the passwords to access from home Grolier Online, NetTrekker, and TEL.

Students have been given guidelines for the first Book Share that will be due 
Sept. 24.  Ask your child to tell you about it!

We had our first lesson on using the Cornell Notetaking System on Sept. 21 
and began to look at online catalogs for research using our Dell Laptop 
cart.  We will continue to use our laptops this week as we develop our 
skills using Cornell notetaking and learning about online research.

Thanks to those of you who have returned your family's pledge cards for 
Invest!

Our next Spelling Unit will be Unit 7.  Students need to be prepared for our 
test on Friday.

I sent home your child's id number for Gradespeed on Aug. 25.  I will be 
entering grades in Gradespeed as I grade papers and will send home our first 
group of papers on Friday in a Friday folder.  If your child has a missing 
assignment, it will reflect as a zero in their grades and be noted by "msg".

YEARBOOK ORDER FORMS have been sent home. Please ask your child to give you 
the form today.  Orders placed before Dec. 1 have a discounted price of $33.

Please sign the test papers in your child's folder and return the folder with 
the signed papers on Monday.
