Discipline
Policies at MES:
Students must accept the reasonable authority of all teachers, administrators
and other staff members to control student conduct at school and school
activities. For a school to function effectively there must be order and
discipline.
Running and
Chewing Gum are not allowed anywhere in the school building. Failure to follow
these rules will result in Detention for grades 2 – 4 and having a ticket
pulled in grades K – 1. Students should walk to the right side of the hall.
Profanity in any
form (written, spoken, or pictures) will not be permitted.
Both policy and
law strictly prohibit Smoking/Possession of tobacco. Students caught smoking
or having tobacco in their possession will be sent to the office. According to
the Youth Access to Tobacco Act — Any student with tobacco or tobacco products
on the school campus or school function will be given an automatic citation
which will be sent directly to Juvenile Court.
Fighting will
not be tolerated. When fights occur, the parents of both parties will be
notified. Disciplinary action will be taken at the office level.
Disrespectful
behavior will not be permitted anywhere at MES. Students must conduct
themselves in a respectful manner at all times and toward ALL staff members
and one another. Failure to show proper respect will result in serious
consequences.
Discipline Cards
Yellow
Discipline Cards — These cards will be used throughout the building as a means
of recording inappropriate conduct. These cards are primarily used in grades 3
– 4; however, other grades have chosen to use them as a means of recording
discipline. The accumulation of yellow discipline cards will start over at the
beginning of each nine weeks grading period.
Consequences for
Yellow Discipline Cards:
1-2 cards = Warning
3-5 cards = Warning & Notify Parent
6-8 cards = Detention
9-12 cards = Saturday School
13 & up = Administrative Decision
This list of
consequences will serve as a MINIMUM. Each teacher/team/administrator
reserves the right to impose more serious consequences.
Detention (LAB):
When a child fails to stay on the assigned date of detention, they will be
assigned an additional day of detention (two for one). Please make
arrangements to pick up your child promptly at the front/double doors at
3:45p.m.
Conduct at
MES (Grades 2 – 4):
We believe that good conduct is essential to having a proper atmosphere for
learning to take place. The following scale will be used to determine conduct
grades.
1-4 Offenses = S
5-8 Offenses = N
9 & up = U
The number of
offenses includes all yellow discipline cards, blue Lab cards, and corporal
punishment notices added together for any given nine weeks grading period.
(Blue Lab cards will be given to record when a student receives an automatic
detention or automatic
Saturday
School
. Corporal punishment forms will be used to record any corporal punishment
administered.)
Tennessee
State
law does allow certified personnel to administer corporal punishment.
Any student that
has been suspended, whether in school or out-of-school, or has been in
alternative school will receive a U in conduct for that nine weeks. Remember,
the number of offenses will start over at the beginning of each nine weeks.
