School Improvement I School Choice Letter 2009-2010 School Year

July 22, 2009

Dear Parent,

Milan Elementary School has been identified by the Tennessee Department of Education as a high priority school in School Improvement I. This means that students have not met state and federal goals in math in the subgroup of African Americans. Results of the spring test scores indicate that 67% of the districts schools met state and federal goals while 77.9% of all state schools are in good standing based on those same goals.

Because Milan Elementary School is a Title I high priority school, your child would be eligible to transfer to another school that has met state and federal goals. However, since we are a single attendance area school, we do not have another school in our system to offer as a choice.

Milan Elementary is working hard with the state and district to increase student achievement in math and reading. The State Department of Education will disseminate best education practices through numerous professional development opportunities year-round. The State Department of Education adopted new curriculum standards and will provide professional development opportunities as well. They will also assign a State Exemplary Educator to work with administrators and teachers. Milan Elementary School will use Title I funds to supplement the regular education program with staff, educational materials, and training. The Milan Special School District's central office staff will provide increased assistance to analyze achievement scores and refine the School Improvement Plan. Milan Elementary School will work hard to increase parental involvement through various activities. Milan Elementary School will use targeted resources from the school system to improve academic achievement, especially in the area of mathematics.

Parent and community involvement in continuing to support the school is welcome. We encourage you to help by participating in parent/teacher conferences, extra-curricular activities, and other school sponsored events. Please encourage your child to attend school each day and review their homework and test results. Support good study habits by talking with your child's teacher often about school assignments.  Learn about strategies to improve student academic achievement through resources which are available from the Tennessee Department of Education  http://wwww.state.tn.us/education or the United States Department of Education www.ed.gov
