Who is Milan's Superintendent?
Dr. Mary Reel began as our Superintendent/Director on June 1, 2007. Dr.
Reel had previously been employed in Milan as our Special Education Director
a few years back. She then moved to Nashville to become Executive Director
of State Testing for about 3 years. We are pleased to have her back in
Milan.
--------------------------------------
What does AYP really mean?
AYP stands for Adequate Yearly Progress. This means that ALL students must
make adequate yearly progress each year in order for Milan schools to be in
Good Standing with the State Department of Education. All Milan school are
currently in Good Standing.
--------------------------------------
What is Early 5's?
Early 5's is the gift of time. It it a two year configuration of
kindergarten designed especially to meet the needs of children who have late
birthdays and would just barely be eligible for kindergarten.

How do I learn more about the curriculum being used with my child?
Contact Vera Jones at 686-2132 for specific information. All teachers use
the state curriculum standards from the State Department of Education.
--------------------------------------
What is Title I and how do I know if my child is getting Title I help?
Milan Elementary is a Schoolwide Title I school. This means that EVERY
child, teacher and teacher assistant in Milan Elementary is getting help
through the Title I project. Title I is a federal program that provides
supplemental assistance to schools. Milan Elementary has a high enough
percentage of free/reduced students to qualify us as a Schoolwide school
therefore we do not distinguish which children, teachers or teacher
assistants are served. EVERYONE at Milan Elementary is Title I.
--------------------------------------
Do I need to attend the Title I Annual Parent Meeting each fall?
Yes, we would love to have ANY parent from Milan Elementary to attend this
meeting. The annual meeting was on August 21st at 7:00 p.m. If you
missed that meeting and want to be on the Parent Advisory Committee which
meets monthly, just contact Carolyn Cutlip at 686-0840.
--------------------------------------
What is the Parent Advisory Committee and how do you get on this committee?
We actually have 2 Advisory Committees or Councils at Milan Elementary. One
is the Community Advisory Council for the Pre-K program and the other is the
Parent Advisory Committee for the whole school. If you are interested in
serving on either committee/council, contact Carolyn Cutlip (686-0840) or
Dana Carey (686-8852). Times and dates are flexible to accommodate the
members.
--------------------------------------
How can I be more involved in my child's education?
Read notes and newsletters coming home with your child. You will learn of
many ways to be involved through these notes. If you know of a way you want
to help and no one has mentioned that way, just let us hear from you. Call
our Parent Involvement Coordinator, Carolyn Cutlip, at 686-0840.
--------------------------------------
What is the school wide writing test?
The State of Tennessee designates a day in February of each year for ALL
students in grades 5, 8, and 11 to write from a writing prompt we receive
from the State. All grades practice for this yearly test by having practice
writing prompts.

Why are PreK parents given permission to go to the classrooms daily?
State law requires an adult to sign 4 year old children in and out
of their classrooms. They cannot be allowed to walk to and from alone. We
issue yellow PreK badges and PreK car tags to desginate who these people are.
