How does it work?
Some students enter first grade ready to begin A.R. and others
need to wait. Students will take a test that will show their
reading range of books for his or her ability. Students will test
on A.R. books in their individual reading range.
Where do we get A.R. books?
The school library has a whole section filled with A.R. books in
every grade level. Students can check out these books on our
library day. I also have many A.R. books in the classroom. You
may even have some A.R. books at home. The public library is also
another place to get A.R. books. A list of books that are in the
A.R. program can be found at the school website
http://www.wcschools.com/mje/
When can my child read A.R. books?
At home whenever you allow them. Just fill out the reading log
and return it to school when your child is ready to test. At
school when they finish their work and during station time.
What about Points?
Points are earned based on the book level and the correct number
of answers on the test. Students earn points and get to use them
at the A.R. store to buy toys, candy and small prizes. THe points
also go towards school wide prizes and recognition. We will have
an A.R. assembly each 9 week period. First grade students will be
recognized for earning 25, 37, 50, 75, and 100 points.
Can I read the books to my child?
Children must read and comprehend the books on their own to get
the full benefit of the program. We can help with words, but we
cannot read it for them.
