KINDERGARTEN
1. Singing
   A. Sing simple songs, matching pitch within a narrow range.
   B. Sing simple songs, accurately using high and low pitches.
2. Playing Instruments
   A. Perform a steady beat alone.
   B. Choose and play long or short sounds as appropriate to accompany   
      musical selections.
   C. Choose and play high and low sounds appropriate for a musical setting.
   D. Echo short rhythmic patterns independently.
3. Improvising
   A. Improvise vocally, with appropriate tonality and rhythm, an answer to 
      simple musical questions.
4. Reading and notating.
   A. Speak or perform with body percussion icons that represent one or two

   A. Recognize same and different patterns within a song or poem.

   A. Perform a steady beat in a group setting using classroom instruments.
   B. Play classroom instruments, responding to word cues in familiar songs 
      and poems.
   C. Perform on pitched instruments short melodic passages with a limited 
      set of pitches.
3. Improvising
   A. Create musical sounds using voices, body percussion or classroom 
      instruments to accompany stories.
4. Composing
   A. Create melodies with limited pitches for short poems or nursery rhymes.
5. Reading and Notating
   A. Read and perform symbols which represent a rest, and one or two sounds 
      per steady beat.
6. Listening and Analyzing
   A. Identify familiar repeated patterns in new songs or orchestral pieces.
   B. Identify same, different, same (form) in listening examples and songs.
   C. Differentiate between two contrasting selections of music by 
      describing the mood they create.
   D. Recognize one or many voices or instruments when they are heard in 
      recorded selections.

GRADE 2
1. Singing
   A. Demonstrate accuracy in singing major, minor, and pentatonic songs in 
      an extended range with good vocal technique (correct posture, 
      breathing, pitch matching, blending).
   B. Use correct articulation appropriately when singing familiar songs.
   C. Alternate singing between ostinato and melody.
2. Playing Instruments
   A. Play on all beats in duple and triple meter, accenting each strong 
      beat.
   B. Play smooth or detached articulation on selected instruments.
   C. Perform patterns from rhythmic notation that include quarter notes, 
      eighth notes, half notes, and rests.
   D. Perform, on melody instruments, short patterns incorporating steps, 
      skips and repeated tones.
   E. Play ostinati incorporating quarter notes and eighth notes to 
      accompany a song being sung by the class.
3. Improvising
   A. Play word rhythms of familiar short songs or poems, using the 
      pentatonic scale.
4. Composing and Arranging
   A. Create and notate short (sixteen beat) melodies using notes from the  
      pentatonic scale.
5. Reading and Notating Music.
   A. Construct rhythmic patterns from dictation with the use of 
      manipulatives.
   B. Sing or play notated patterns in the pentatonic scale.

   A. Identify same and different sections in unfamiliar music.
   B. Recognize orchestral instruments by sight and sound.

   A. Compose a four-measure introduction to a selected song.
   B. Compose a four-measure coda to a selected song.
5. Reading and Notating
   A. Read traditional notation for simple melodies.
   B. Write traditional notation for a simple melody.
6. Listening and Analyzing
   A. Recognize, aurally, same and different sections in a larger musical 
      form.
   B. Identify solo instruments.
   C. Analyze and compare various types of introductions in vocal and 
      instrumental music.

   A. Apply specified criteria to evaluate selected compositions.

   A. Compose a four phrase ternary song.
   B. Compose an introduction, interlude, and coda to a familiar song.

   A. Read simple melodic notation.
   B. Notate a simple melody using traditional notation.
6. Listening and Analyzing
   A. Identify two, three, and four part form using appropriate terminology.
   B. Identify interludes in vocal and instrumental music using appropriate 
      terminology.

   A. Discuss evaluation of selected music and music performances based on 
      given criteria and compare with personal preferences for the same

   A. Improvise upon a simple melody using pitched instruments.
   B. Improvise a variation using pitched and/or non-pitched instruments.
   C. Improvise a simple accompaniment within specified guidelines.
4. Composing 
   A. Compose a harmonic accompaniment to a given melody using specified 
      guidelines.
   B. Create a vocal and instrumental attangement of a familiar tune.
5. Reading and Notating Music.
   A. Play, accurately, a simple notated harmony part.
