From the classroom...

November 6th, 2009

We had a great Social Studies Fair this week. Brooke McNutt won 3rd place with her project on Sacajewea. Samuel Romesburg won Honorable Mention. Congratulations! I would also like to mention that everyone did a great job and worked especially hard.

Make sure that students do their reading and multiplication contracts. We will be working with fractions and eventually adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Students need to know their multiplication facts "inside and out." This means students need to be able to list the factors of a product (like 5 X 2 are two factors of 10). AND the multiplies of numbers (3, 6, 9, 12...). They need to know this in order to convert fractions to like denominators.

Also, students are required to know how to operate and use calculators. We start in elementary school because in the middle school, students are required to use advanced calculators for pre-algebra and algebra courses. If student start at an early age-the complicated function calculators will be easier to learn later on. Yet, this still does not keep our students from being required to learn their math facts.

In Accelerated Math - we have teams who are striving to meet objective goals. So far, here is the leader board for our teams:

Knoxville 48%
Memphis 44%
Maryville 14%
Chattanooga 13%
Nashville 11%

These percentages are based upon the number of objectives mastered by team members. Students who complete more practices and are able to test on more objectives.

Upcoming in reading, students will be moving toward participating in book club/literature circles. During independent reading time, these groups will be able to discuss novels that they are all reading. Students will be able to utilize the reading skills that we are learning good readers have.

In Economics, we are learning about the products and services made and grown in Tennessee. Also, don't forget the students' economics projects. Students have been excited about learning how to budget for items and about earning "income" as well.

Also: Don't forget yearbook orders.
Upcoming: Holiday photos. Order forms are sent home 11-6-09
