December News
From The Little Warriors
2009
Our December curriculum will be a Life Science theme with a focus on
hibernation. We will explore the following concepts:
• Animal habitats
• Types of animals/who sleeps during the winter and who is wide awake
• Hibernation
• How our lives change based on the weather
Each day we have small group meetings; the math groups meet in the mornings
and the read/write groups meet in the afternoons. Some are working on
reading skills while others are focusing on pre-reading skills. We
concentrate on following the interest levels of our students and providing
each with the instruction they require to be strong learners.
As many of you have noticed, we change our classroom, seating assignments,
and locker locations from time to time. This is our way of challenging our
students to work on name identification, making new friends, and work within
different groups as well as to be able to adapt to changes. These are
lifelong skills and our students are doing very well with them.
When our students return from Christmas break we will begin practicing more
kindergarten readiness skills and assessing students based on kindergarten
entry standards. Our students generally experience a huge leap in their
maturity, attention spans and adaptable skills by midyear. We certainly want
to foster more independence and encourage the students to do more for
themselves by themselves. You can help your child achieve their goals by
encouraging them to make good choices and think before they act. The
simplest things we do as parents often have the greatest impact on our
children as they grow up.
Calendar Events:
Dec. 4th trip to Polar Express—we will leave @8:15-please have your child at
school by 8:05.
December 17th—Our last full day before winter break. Pre-k students do not
attend on the 18th as this is an abbreviated day for the k-8 groups.
Have a great holiday season and enjoy this special time with your children.
