About The Therapist

I have a Master of Science Degree in Communication Science and Disorders
from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I received my Bachelor of
Science Degree from the University of Montevallo, also in Alabama.

In addition, I have a Certificate of Clinical Competence in
Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech, Language, and Hearing
Association (ASHA). This signifies that I have the national credentials to
practice Speech-Language Pathology. I also hold a state
license to practice Speech-Language Pathology in the Public Schools of
Tennessee.

I have worked in a variety of settings. In addition to the school and
preschool settings, I have worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics.
Prior to coming to Tennessee, I worked for an ENT physician, primarily with
patients with voice and swallowing problems.

I currently work at Southside Elementary, in addition to West Wilson Middle
School and MAP. At these schools, I provide many services. These include:

PROVIDE INFORMATION about the various speech, language, or hearing disorders
to teachers, students, parents

SCREEN students to determine potential risk for a communication disorder.

CONSULT with school personnel and parents to determine if an evaluation is
indicated.

EVALUATE students (with prior parental permission) in order to determine
their current speech and language development. If one or more areas of
speech and language development are significantly impaired, I then work with
school personnel to determine how the deficit impacts the student's academic
abilities. I make a determination of eligibility under State of Tennessee
Guidelines and recommend placement/services if indicated.

WRITE evaluation and eligibility reports.

DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT IEP's (Individualized Educational Programs).

PROVIDE therapy for those students who eligible for services.

DEMONSTRATE language enrichment activities in classrooms, assist in district-
wide assessment, or do lessons on listening, speaking, voice projection,
sign language, hearing impairment.

REFER students to other professionals if additional services are
required.

After school, I tutor high school students in logic, public speaking,
writing, and art.

goals:

"The real business of life is trying to understand each other."-Gilbert
Parker [Northern Lights].

My goal is that every student with whom I work will leave my room challenged
and encouraged to be better at understanding and expressing themselves to
others.
