Week of October 6th – 10th
3rd Grade – Miss Robin

Reading – Our reading story for this week is “Prudy’s Problem and How She 
Solved It”.  We will study this story in class throughout the week.  We will 
take a reading test over comprehension of this story and the vocabulary 
words associated with it on Thursday.  (The test format will normally 
include a variety of testing mechanisms such as: matching, multiple choice, 
fill in the blank from a word bank, true/false, or short answer.)  Please 
read this story at home with your child on Monday night.  It is located on 
pages 202-217.

Vocabulary for this story is as follows:
1.	collection – a group of things gathered from many places that belong 
together
2.	enormous – very large or huge
3.	realize – to understand something clearly
4.	scattered – separated and going in different directions
5.	shiny – bright or giving off bright light
6.	strain – to stretch too much
**Please review these words at home with your child during the week.**

Math – In math this week, we will continue with our Saxon Math Lessons.  
Math skills this week include:
•	Addition and Subtraction with Mental Computation
•	Measurement using centimeters
•	Add and Subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers with Regrouping
•	Counting Money
•	Greater than/ Less than
•	Intro.  Basic concept of multiplication
•	½ of a set of objects
	
Please have your child practice the following counting patterns at home this 
week.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24
Count by 10’s from any given number such as:
3, 13, 23, 33, 43, etc.  or 6, 16, 26, 36, 46, etc.

7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84

Spelling – Our words this week have ou and ow sounds in them.  We will have 
a test on Thursday of this week.  Your child will have to write the word 
correctly.

English  -  We will continue to discuss abbreviations in class this week.  
We will also discuss compound words and combining sentences.

We will have a science test and a social studies test this week!  Study 
guides will be sent home for both of these tests.

PLEASE DON’T FORGET THAT FALL BREAK IS OCTOBER 10TH AND 13TH!
