Class Studies

November 16, 2009:

1. READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - Our story this week and Monday and Tuesday 
   is Pearl and Wagner.  We're practicing on a play, The First Thanks-
   giving, to be presented Friday in the library.
   
   Vocabulary words to know: robot, wad, trash, electricity (energy 
   that makes light, heat, motion, or force)

   High-frequency words to know: shoe, science, village, guess, won,
   pretty, watch  

   Amazing words and meanings (for oral vocabulary):

   1. construct - to build or put together
   2. sidekick - a buddy, good friend, or partner
   3. unique - the only one like it
   4. contraption - something that is put together in a very odd way
   5. foolproof - so simple and safe that anybody can use it
   6. daydream - You are awake, but you are thinking of pleasant things
   7. project - something you plan and then do
   8. scrap - a tiny piece of something; leftovers

   COMPREHENSION SKILL - Author's Purpose - reason for writing
 
   SPELLING - long e words:  ee, ea, y
   read, feel, easy, deep, seat, party, wheel, leave, windy,
   sleep, teeth, team

   ENGLISH - compound words; exact nouns
   *UNIT 3 TEST ON NOUNS FRIDAY

2. MATH - reading a recipe, identifying cups, 1/2 cups,
   teaspoons, 1/2 teaspoon; counting dimes,nickels, pennies; 
   making a symmetrical design; adding 2 and 3 two-digit numbers
   
3. SOCIAL STUDIES - Unit 2 - Learning About Communities
   Vocabulary words and definitions:  
   1. community - a place where people live, work, and play
   2. neighborhood - a place where people live near one another
   3. map - a drawing of a place
   4. map key - tells you what map symbols mean
   5. symbol - a small picture or drawing that stands for a real thing
   6. direction words - north, south, east, west, up, down, over, under,
      top, bottom, left, right, above, below 
   7. city - a large community
   8. town - a small community
   9. suburb - a community near a city
  10. transportation - the way people travel from one place to another 

4. SCIENCE  - Chapter 3 - LAND HABITATS
   Vocabulary words and meanings to know:  
   1.  habitat - a place where plants and animals can meet their needs
   2.  woodland forest - a habitat that gets enough rain and sunlight 
       for trees to grow well
   3.  migrate - to move to another place
   4.  rain forest - a habitat that gets rain almost every day
   5.  desert - a dry habitat that gets very little rainfall
   6.  Arctic - a very cold place near the north pole
