Class Studies

December 14, 2009:

1. READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - The story this week is Rosa and Blanca.  
   
   Vocabulary words and definitions to know:  

   1. tortillas - thin, round cakes made of corn meal that are 
                  served hot
   2. luckiest - having more luck and good fortune than anyone
                 else
   3. chiles - a hot pepper that is used as seasoning

   High-frequency words to know: daughters, youngest, their, buy, 
                                 many, alone, half

   Amazing words and meanings (for oral vocabulary):

   1. abundant - more than enough or plenty
   2. assist - to help someone
   3. generous - to share
   4. dismay - a feeling of deep disappointment and fear
   5. efficient - to get things done without wasting time or energy

   1. rules - remind us what to do and what not to do; help us work
      and play together; give us rights and responsibilities; help
      to keep us safe and health
   2. laws - community rules
   3. leaders - people who help run the community
   4. mayor - the leader of a town or city
   5. governor - the leader of a state who is elected by the people 
      to make laws to help and protect the people
   6. vote - a way for people to choose community leaders
   7. state - made of many communities - towns, suburbs, cities, and
      farms
   8. country - a large area of land made up of states, communities,
      and people
   9. capitol building - the building where the governor and other
      state leaders work

4. SCIENCE  - Chapter 3 - LAND HABITATS - TEST TUESDAY
   Vocabulary words and meanings to know:  
   1.  habitat - a place where plants and animals can meet their needs
   2.  woodland forest - a habitat that gets enough rain and sunlight 
       for trees to grow well
   3.  migrate - to move to another place
   4.  rain forest - a habitat that gets rain almost every day
   5.  desert - a dry habitat that gets very little rainfall
   6.  Arctic - a very cold place near the north pole
