August 10 through 14 Students will be introduced to Geography and what my expectations are for the school year. We will start working from our textbooks on Wednesday and students will complete their first vocabulary list during class on Thursday. I will post weekly assignments beginning on Monday, August 17. August 17 through 21 Monday -- Introduce different types and kinds of maps we will study this year. Complete world map in class, due on Tuesday. Tuesday -- Vocabulary Quiz on Geographic terms...followed by discussion on latitude and longitude, brainpop video during class...world maps due Wednesday -- I will have a substitute teacher in my classes, students will place chapter one vocabulary words in their notebooks and complete a textbook assignment answering questions from chapter one. Thursday -- Introduce chapter one, section one notes using power point presentation...review chapter one vocabulary words from Wednesday. Friday -- NO SCHOOL....Race Day August 24 through 28 Monday -- Class discussion on Chapter 1, section 2...5 themes of geography, worksheet completed during class Tuesday -- Chapter 1, section 3 notes and discussion, mindpoint quiz game for entire class, good review for all of chapter 1 Wednesday -- Chapter one vocabulary quiz (13 words), review of map skills and longitude/latitude Thursday -- Complete study guide for chapter one during class, give answers at end for tomorrow's chapter one test Friday -- Chapter 1 Test, closed book and closed notes...includes all vocabulary words from the intro to geography unit and chapter one; all of the notes for chapter one in notebook; and map or worls (continents, oceans, Equator, Prime Meridian, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle) August 31 through September 4 Monday -- Review Chapter One Test, distribute grades, spend half of class in computer lab working on www.geosense.net, complete chapter two vocabulary words in notebooks Tuesday -- Introduce to each class an A to Z guide....using notebook and textbook and why reading is so important, complete A to Z guides during class Wednesday -- Guest Speaker for every class Thursday -- Review A to Z guides, review vocabulary words for Chapter Two, start chapter two/section one notes Friday -- Chapter two vocabulary quiz, finish section one notes and start on section two September 8 through 11 Tuesday -- Students will complete a reading comprehension activity for section three of chapter two, pages 36-38. Following this activity, students will take a few notes on sections 2 and 3. Wednesday -- Students will conclude taking notes for sections 2 and 3. We will begin a quiz game that reviews all of the information for chapter two. This can be used for extra credit/bonus points. Thursday -- Complete the quiz game for extra credit. Review all of the Chapter two materials and complete a study guide during class. Friday -- Chapter 2 test, closed book, closed notes...all of the ch. 2 vocabulary, notes, and reading from the text. September 14 through 18 Monday -- Students will spend half the class period in the computer lab. In addition, students will also complete the chapter three vocabulary list in class (20 words) Tuesday -- Homework check for chapter three vocabulary words, intrduce ch. 3, section 1 notes (latitude zones, weather, climate) Wednesday -- Chapter 3, sections 1 and 2 notes first part of class followed by a reading comprehension activity using part of chapter three. Thursday -- Complete notes on major climate zones of the world, ch. 3, sec. 2; vocabulary quiz from 20 words for ch. 3 Friday -- MAP DAY! Bring colored pencils to class...complete climate zone world map during class....LAST GRADE OF FIRST SIX-WEEKS September 21 through 25 Monday -- Computer Lab half of class, climate zone maps due (started in class on Friday), review all notes from sections 1 and 2, start section 3 of chapter 3 Tuesday -- Chapter 3, section 3 notes on natural environments, complete classroom quiz on section 3 at end of class Wednesday -- Chapter 3, section 4 notes and discussion, chapter 3 vocabulary quiz (all vocab words in chapter) Thursday -- Chapter 3 review and study guide during class Friday -- Chapter 3 Test, closed book, includes all notes, vocabulary AND maps we covered on chapter 3....this will be most difficult test so far this year, please advise that studying needs to occur for a good grade ***PLEASE NOTE*** Due to the recent illnesses throughout our school, several students are missing classes. IF your student is absent due to flu, other illness, etc... PLEASE make sure they read the chapter we are working on during class. I don't distribute lots of busy work items such as worksheets, workbooks, etc... I use lots of powerpoints during class and we have lots of discussion about the topics we are covering in class. So, reading the chapter and even answering questions at the end of each section might help keep your student caught up. Thank you. October 5 through 8 Monday -- Compare and contrast different types of world governments and economies, notes from power point presentations and discussion during class Tuesday -- Complete notes on chapter 4, section 4...global connections and interdependence; review materials in chapter 4 Wednesday -- Open book, notebook, etc...chapter 4 test Thursday -- Learning game, first four chapters...Bingo, Jeopardy, Deal or No Deal Friday -- NO SCHOOL!! October 13 through 16 Tuesday -- Introduce Chapter 5, two maps...political and physical of the United States, due Thursday Wednesday -- Chapter 5, section 1 notes...major landforms of the U.S., chapter 5 vocabulary in notebooks Thursday -- States and Capitals quiz on the NORTHEAST REGION only, complete U.S. climate zone map Friday -- students will complete a timeline from section 2 in class AND take notes on section 2 October 19 through 23 Monday -- Students will be introduced to the Ch. 5, sec. 2 notes and create a history timeline during class. Tuesday -- South Region states and capitals quiz followed by notes and discussion on major U.S. historical events such as Louisiana Purchase, Homestead Act, Civil War, World Wars I and II Wednesday -- Continue notes and discussion on section 2 followed by a group assignment toward end of class, involving section 3 Thursday -- Students will present materials from yesterday's group work to other students Friday -- Students will complete bar graphs on information involving U.S. cities and their population October 26 through 30 Monday -- Computer Lab last half of class, students will complete a bar graph in class comparing populations of major U.S. Cities Tuesday -- Students will take a quiz on the Midwest region of the U.S. (states and caps) After quiz, students will receive a study guide to complete for chapter 5...test tomorrow Wednesday -- Chapter 5 test, all notes, textbook reading, maps, etc... Tuesday -- Chapter 6 vocabulary words (7), 20 minute video on Canada, section 1 notes Wednesday -- Section 2 notes, writing assignment from page 150 in book, role of immigration in Canada Thursday -- Canada regions (4) map, foldable about the four regions....comparing and contrasting Friday -- Chapter 6 open book test....all notes, maps, vocabulary, textbook, etc... November 9 through 13 Monday -- Students will complete chapters 7 and 8 vocabulary words in notebooks, followed by three maps on Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Region Tuesday -- Students will take West Region U.S. States and Capitals Quiz followed by notes for section 1 of chapters 7 and 8 Wednesday -- Students will complete foldables for the Ancient Mexican, Central American, and South American civilizations (Aztecs, Incas, Mayas, and Olmecs) Thursday -- Vocabulary quiz for chapters 7 and 8, notes/discussion on history of Latin America, chapters 7 and 8, section 2 Friday -- The building of the Panama Canal, video and notes/discussion November 16 through 20 Monday -- Students will complete notes for chapters 7 and 8 and review for tomorrow's test Tuesday -- Chapters 7 and 8 open book, open notes, foldables, anything we've covered in class test Wednesday -- Two maps on South America, physical and political features...we will be combining chapters 9, 10, and 11 for the South America unit. Students will copy the first half of the vocabulary words in their notebooks and this is a homework assignment for them to complete. Thursday -- Review vocabulary words from yesterday. Students will complete an atlas activity during class on South America for a grade. Friday -- Vocabulary Quiz for the words we reviewed Thursday, South America maps are due, short section of notes on Chapter 9, section 1. November 30 through December 4 Monday -- Compare some basic things such as language, religion, economy, government between South America and the United States. Complete a word search involving the physical features of South America. Tuesday -- Trip to Barter Theater in Abingdon. Wednesday -- South America map test...all 13 countries by location and the major physical features such as Andes, Amazon, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Patagonia, Pampas, Mount Aconcagua. Chapter 9 review questions after test. Thursday -- Copy Chapters 10 and 11, part two of South America vocabulary; followed by a graphic organizer comparing and contrasting the countries of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Friday -- Chapter 10 worksheet during class followed by mindpoint geography game for extra credit points. December 14 through 18 Monday -- Computer Lab half of class working on Study Island assignment, map review during remaining half of class period.
