READ YOUR STUDENT HANDBOOK. ALL SCHOOL POLICIES ARE ENFORCED IN MY ROOM. THE
FOLLOWING ARE GOOD COMMON SENSE RULES TO HELP YOU IN SCIENCE:
DISCIPLINE -- GENERAL CLASS PROCEDURES
1. Show respect to others and you will receive it from others.
2. When you enter the classroom, be seated immediately in your assigned
seat. Do not move to the seat of a person who is absent. Only one person
at a time should be at the pencil sharpener, and trash can.
Ask permission to use the pencil sharpener or go to trash can. This
cuts down on class interruptions.
3. START UP ACTIVITY: Begin the assignment which was last given to you.
This will usually be reviewing, and studying your homework, and being
ready for class.
4. TO SPEAK, raise your hand, and wait to be recognized.
5. Keep your hands, and feet to yourself. Do not take other people's things.
6. Bring required materials to class. Loose-leaf paper, composition book,
textbook, pen (blue or black ink only), and pencil. No pages are to be
torn from composition book. MR BARNETTE WILL NOT ACCEPT PAPER TORN FROM
ANY COMPOSITION BOOK.
7. Do not put your books and materials in the aisles. It is messy and makes
it difficult to get about the room. Keep materials and books in or under
your desk.
8. Do not bother the air conditioner, windows, window shades, cabinets,
sinks, or teacher's desk. Take nothing from the teacher's desk. Put
nothing on the teacher's desks. This includes the desk of the EAs.
9. Do not write or pass notes in class. Not only is it a waste of your class
time, it is causing others to be off task.
10. Please do NOT pass out candy, gum or cough drops. We will discuss why.
11. Chewing gum is allowed. Remember, it is a privilege, and not a right.
Improper use of gum may result in retraction of the privilege.
12. WATER is allowed in class as long as it does not become a disturbance.
If a student uses water or the container in a way that disturbs the
educational process, he/she will lose that privilege.
13. Slouching in one's desk, sleeping and general inattentiveness is not
conducive to a good learning atmosphere in the classroom. Such behavior
will not be allowed. Refer to student hand book page 12.
"Teachers and administrators shall strive to create a school environment
favorable to the development of self-discipline, self-esteem, and self-
direction. ...Students are under the supervision of many teachers during the
school day. Individual teachers have classroom standards, and students must
learn to abide by those standards. The teacher has the authority to
maintain discipline and is expected to exercise the responsibility to do
so."
14. When the teacher has to be away, we are fortunate to have substitutes
to help us with the learning process. The job of a substitute is not
an easy one. Please do not take advantage of the substitute's good
nature by asking to do things that you know the regular teacher does
not allow.
INTERIMS
The interim is sent home three weeks before the report card so that the
parents know of their child's progress AND to give the student time to make
up missing work.
NOTE TO PARENTS: STUDENTS WILL SOMETIMES BRING THE SIGNED INTERIM BACK
TO THE TEACHER. RETURN ONLY THE BOTTOM OF THE INTERIM AND KEEP THE TOP SO
THAT YOU HAVE A LIST OF WORK TO BE MADE-UP.
GRADING POLICY
The 6 week grade is determined by tests, quizzes, classwork, homework,
lab and projects. Tests count 100 points each, quizzes count 30- 40
points each, homework assignments count 10 - 25 points each. The class
grade is then determined by dividing the total possible points into the
number of points accumulated. Lab grades will be taken in class and in
the science lab. Each lab grade is averaged just as any other classwork.
MATERIALS
You were given a list of required materials for science. Text book, and
pencil are easily understood. You need a large notebook (composition book)
to be used only for science. No other subject information should be in it.
Just because many composition books are labeled "5 Subjects", that does not
mean that you may use your science composition book for anything other than
science. Be sure to understand that if you do not have a blue or black pen,
that does not mean you can use green, or red or pink. Paper torn from a
composition book is not loose-leaf paper, even if you tear off the ragged
edge . That is messy. Before class starts, borrow a sheet from a friend, and
be sure to pay it back.
LOST AND FOUND
Books and items left in the room are placed in a lost and found box. If you
forget your book, DO NOT take another student's book from lost and found.
You do not have permission.
REST ROOM
You have five minutes between class to use the rest room. Please, do so
at that time. Between classes you do not need to ask me to use the rest room.
Just go, but be in class on time. If you waste your time between classes and
do not go to the rest room when you should, then please do not waste class
time by asking to go then.
If you have a medical condition which would cause you to "not be able to
wait" please bring a note from your parents which will be filed with the
school nurse. I realize there are emergency conditions that arise and I
will work with you.
TAKING A TEST
Be sure to:
1. put your name on the paper. First AND Last. Write so that it
can be read.
2. fill in the date
3. fill in the class title with the letter or period number.
4. use a cover sheet. No talking or communication of any kind. This is seen
as cheating and may result in a zero. Read your student handbook for
school rules. No disruptive motions, or noise.
5. Use capital letters to answer questions.
