I love teaching and am thrilled to be at Vance Middle
School. I have taught for several years in Atlanta, Georgia; Bristol,
Virginia; St. Anne's in Bristol, Virginia and most recently at Central
Elementary in Bristol, Tennessee.
I did my undergraduate work at Furman University in Greenville, SC, my
Master's degree at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, and most
recently completed my doctoral work (May, 2006) at East Tennessee State
University in Johnson City.
I am married to Patrick W. Hickie, and we have three sons: Patrick,
Chris, and Mark.They are all currently serving in the United States Air
Force. Mark is married and his wife, Elia, is in the Air Force
also.
My favorite times outside of teaching include being outdoors
(especially at the lake), traveling often, reading, and spending time
with my family. I have seven brothers and two sisters who are spread
all over the United States! Visiting each of them is a favorite thing of
mine to do!
My primary mission is to increase literacy and sharpen the writing skills of
my students. I feel the most effective way to accomplish this mission is to
immerse students in the very best literature, encourage them to assess and
think critically, engage them in discussion, and ultimately ask them to
convey what they have learned in writing.
