attitude - (according to our research - 60% attitude relates to your success 
as a student; 40% - environmnet, genetics)

journal - synonym for diary

analogy - compares the relationship between words

synonym - words that have the same or similar meaning

antonym - words that have the opposite meaning

acrostic - poem using the first letter of each word

*exposition - beginning of story (characters, setting, what's happening)
 climax - most exciting part of the story
 rising action - events that lead to the climax
 falling action - events that occur after the climax
 resolution - conclusion/ending of the story

character - person or animal

setting - when or where, time or place

author's purpose - the reason a selection was written

noun - person, place, thing, or idea

compound nouns - a noun made by joining 2 or more words (single words, 
hyphenated words, or separate words)

common nouns - names any one of a group of people, places, things (lowercase)

proper nouns - specific person, place, or thing (capitalized)

pronouns - takes the place of a noun

antecedent - noun that is replaced by a pronoun

verb - expresses action or condition of a person, place, or thing

action verb can be visible or mental

linking verbs - links a noun/pronoun with a word that identifies or describes 
the noun/pronoun (refer to page 17 in the grammar workbook for a list of 
verbs)

helping verbs - verb that comes before the main verb and adds to its meaning 
(refer to page 19 in the grammar workbook for a list of verbs)

singular helping verbs - is, was has
plural helping verbs - are, were, have


adjective - word that describes something

articles
the - definite (points to specific person, place, or thing) 
a, an - indefinite (points to any member of a group of similar people, 
places, things)

homophone - a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in 
meaning. The words may be spelled the same, such as rose (flower) and rose 
(past tense of "rise"), or differently, such as two and too, or know and no, 
or their and there.

Characterization - The way writers develop characters and reveal their traits 
or qualities.

direct characterization - Writers make straightforward statements about a 
character

indirect characterization - writer's present a character's thoughts, words, 
and actions and reveal what characters are saying about each other
