Ways to Help in Grades 1, 2, 3

-Have your child's eyes checked just prior to entrance into the first grade  
and periodically after that.  

-If he wants to read aloud to you from his school book, listen attentively.

-When he/she reads aloud to you, enjoy the story together, laugh over it, 
discuss plot, praise him/her for reading especially well, etc...

-Give children extra opportunities to read.

-Introduce the pleasures of the public library.

-Let your child see you reading frequently.




Simple Strategies for Creating Strong Readers

1.  Invite a child to read with you every day.

2.  When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you  
read.

3.  Read a child's favorite book over and over again.

4.  Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat.  Invite the 
child to join in on these parts.

5.  Discuss new words. 
 
6.  Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story.

7.  Read from avaritey of children's books, including fairy tales, song 
books, poems, and information books.
