This assessment evaluates students' strengths and weaknesses in written communication. The holistic scoring process goes beyond mechanical correctness to measure the overall effectiveness of the students' writing. The assessment serves as a tool used by schools to develop programs to enhance student learning.
Trained, professional scorers evaluate each writing sample using a six-point scale rubric. Each essay will be read by a minimum of two scorers. Scores range from 6 to 1, 6 being the highest, reflect the range of excellence in the essays written in response to the prompt. Pretest information will be sent home prior to testing.
