Small Group Reading
Model We Use:
Small Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for 
Beginning and Struggling Readers

Flexible Grouping
Students work in flexible groups of six or fewer students per 
instructor
Classroom teachers, educational assistants, special education 
teachers, & “special” teachers teach in the program	
45 minute groups for 1st/2nd students
30 minute groups for kindergarten
*****Instruction is in addition to regular classroom/ basal instruction

Parental Involvement
Students have a leveled reader to read each night at home and parents 
sign a log page recording books read.

Assessment
Rigby’s Benchmark 1 and Benchmark 2 Running Record Kits  

DIBELS testing (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) 
administered 3 times per year to students in K-2

Leveled Readers
We use the Reading Recovery Leveling System (Book Levels 1-30)
Books are purchased in sets of six books with a mixture of Fiction & 
Non-fiction.
Other Publishers used: Rigby,  Sundance, Newbridge, Wright Group, 
Dominie
