We will be working on literacy stations and small groups a lot this week.
Our phonics skills of the week are the long vowel y that says e and i, and
reviewing long vowel sounds. Practice words with these sounds throughout
the week with your child. We will continue to explore geometry in math.

Extra Credit: For these last weeks of 2009, there is one final extra credit
assignment. Create a snowman with your child for display in our hallway.
Be creative and think beyond just markers and crayons. You can make a
snowman using cotton balls, buttons, pieces of fabric, sticks, etc. Your
homework is to enjoy each other 

and sandwiches. So, if you do not hear from me, snack food items will be
good….thanks!!

Finally, we had an excellent time at the Tennessee First Grade Workshop at
the end of November! I have many wonderful ideas to explore. This parent
poem was in our materials and I wanted to share it with you in caser you had
not read it before: If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again by Diane Loomans…

If I had my child to raise over again, I’d finger paint more, and point the
finger less.
I’d do less correcting, and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my
watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less, and know to care more. I’d take more hikes,
and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I’d run through more fields,
and gaze at more stars.
I’d do more hugging, and less tugging. I would be firm less often, and
affirm love much more.
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d teach less about the
love of power, and more about the power of love.

Have a wonderful holiday season with your family, much love, Mrs. Curtis
