I completed my Masters degree in Special Education in 2007 and I am
so pleased to be here at WWMS! We have the best students and faculty! Reading
is my passion and I read all kinds of books as often as I can in my free
time. I also enjoy bike riding, hiking, and trips to the beach. I live in Old
Hickory with my husband Tom, who is a composer/musician, and my children Abby
(11) and Jake(8), as well as our collie/spaniel mix dog Shadie, our cat named
Kitty and our hamster, Cupcake.
I have three general goals for my reading classes: to increase the amount of
time my students spend reading books they have personally selected (we have
sustained silent reading each class period); to improve word recognition,
decoding and reading fluency (by giving direct instruction on reading word
parts and re-reading text); and to improve reading comprehension (by
employing connections, visualization, activating prior knowledge and other
strategies).
My goals for the Language Arts classes are to help my students recognize and
use the elements of written and oral language that make our communications
so diverse and expressive. We will study and employ parts of speech,
sentence and paragraph structure, capitalization and punctuation.
