Mr. Davis¡¦ 1st Nine Weeks

~~~ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH~~~
Genetic Engineering Research Paper¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K200 points
Students will pick a genetic engineering topic of their own (gene-splitting,
cloning, stem-cell research, etc.) to research and then write a persuasive
essay about. The paper needs to look at the pros and cons of the subject at
hand. The writer must then take a side and write from the standpoint of a
supporter or opponent for the subject. The paper must follow the traditional
5-paragraph essay format with an introductory paragraph, three supporting
paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. All papers must be typed in 12 point
Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, and titled. The paper must be free of
grammatical errors. Papers must contain a cover page with the student¡¦s
name, teacher¡¦s name, date, and class name. Rubrics will be available from
Mr. Davis and one must be turned in with the research paper.
More details will be discussed in class.
Biome Model¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..200 points
Students must create an example of a biome here on Earth. Students must
choose one of the following biomes to create: Polar ice, Tundra, Coniferous
forest, Tropical rain forest, Temperate deciduous forest, Temperate
grassland, Savanna, Desert, Chaparral, Mountains
You will need to create a representation of that biome showing the factors
that influence it. Factors must include: the animals that would inhabit that
biome, climate, vegetation and plants, water (or lack there of), landscape.
Rubrics will be available from Mr. Davis and one must be turned in with the
model.
Biome Poster¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K.¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K100 points
Students can draw or cut and paste pictures from a magazine on a  large
standard size poster board to create a representation of a biome. The same
criteria listed above is required.
Rubrics will be available from Mr. Davis and one must be turned in with the
poster.
Cherokee Leaf Prints¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K.¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K.¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K100 points
By learning the craft of Cherokee leaf printing you can bring some of
nature¡¦s beauty indoors. The idea is to transfer the natural design of a
leaf to paper, retaining the design of the original leaf. Students will need
to make 10 Cherokee leaf prints. Using a sheet of regular white copy paper,
place a newly-fallen leaf (not dead) underneath the paper with the vein side
of the leaf facing up. Take a crayon of any color and rub it over the top of
the leaf and the design of the leaf will be left on the paper. We will
discuss in class how to do these, as well as make one. Once the prints have
been made, students must mount there design on heavy paper- either
construction paper or card stock (the more colorful, the better).  Once
mounted, students must list four things about the print:
„X	Determine and list the genus and species of the leaf (based on
dichotomous keys in class).
„X	Give the common name for the leaf.
„X	List where the leaf was found (what county)
„X	List the date in which it was found.
Examples of these will be shown in class.
Review of Educational Television Show¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K...¡K¡K¡K..25 points
Television Show must be approved by Mr. Davis. Some possible choices are
Discovery Science Channel, National Geographic Channel, Animal Planet, shows
such as Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, and many more are available. A rubric will
be provided by the teacher and must be completed by the student to receive
full credit.
Vocabulary Flash Cards¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K.................¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..25 points
Flash Cards must be completed and turn in the day we take each vocabulary
test! Flash Cards are to be completed on a 3 x 5 index card. The student is
to write the vocabulary term on the front and the definition (from the
glossary located in the back of the Science textbook) on the back. These
prove to be a great study tool for vocabulary tests. I will grade these and
return for the major test!
