Career Skills

Career Skills is a nine-week class where students learn skills to prepare
them for the job market. Many middle-schoolers are not aware and/or prepared
for how to find a job, or prepare themselves for a job, so this course helps
them to do so.

              During the course, students will:
Learn how to find jobs in newspaper classifieds, on-line resources, or at
various businesses.
Learn how to obtain a job application
Learn how to fill out a job application
Learn how to write and prepare a resume
Learn how to write and prepare a cover letter
Learn how to prepare for an interview process
Learn how to write a thank you letter
Learn how to read a paycheck stub
Learn how to be a successful employee in the job that they earn

During the nine weeks course, students will have hands-on experience with
writing and creating their own customized resume, cover letter, and thank
you letter that they can use for a real job interview once completing the
class. The course culminates with a realistic job interview with members of
the West Wilson Middle School faculty as potential job employers. Students
can pick from any business in the Providence Place Shopping Complex to
interview with. Faculty members are then assigned for each student to
interview with based on the studentˇ¦s own personal preference. Students
must
create a cover letter and resume and obtain an actual job application from
the business they choose to take to the interview. Students are prepared for
the interview by reviewing basic interview questions and formulating answers
for those questions. After the interview, the interviewer grades the
students on how well they were prepared for the interview and the questions.
Upon completing the interview, students must write and deliver a thank you
letter to their potential employer. Students are then graded on their
application, cover letter, resume, thank you letter and a final reflection
paper for the course.
