| West Wilson Middle School Homework Policy
A parent may request work after a student has been absent two days--this
includes leaving early on the first day absent. A parent must request
missed work by 9:00 on the third day if they want to pick it up that day.
They will be able to pick up the work between 2:30 and 3:00. Parents
calling after 9:00 will have to wait until the next day, between 2:30 and
3:00. Using this teacher web is an excellent source as well as contacting
another student in the missed classes.
Reading Check Deadlines--Students are assigned three novels each nine
weeks. Some reading time is provided every day, but students may find it
necessary to read independently outside of school.
Students who want to read a more challenging book must contract with me
BEFORE they read that book. I will give them their deadline at that time.
See FAQ regarding a more challenging book.
Students who choose to write book reports as a form of reading assessment
must obtain the book report packet from me, and I must document their intent
to do so. Book reports are only valid for single reading checks and are due
by the reading check deadline as established for students. Books must also
be shown to the teacher when the book report is submitted.
**Please see the pink student handout for full details.
Extra Credit Reading Opportunity
Here’s an opportunity to earn extra credit test points by doing some extra
reading. The guidelines for earning this extra credit are outlined below.
1. Student must first fulfill the required reading of three books per nine
weeks.
2. As extra credit is based on the AR test score, books used for extra
credit must have a computer test. No book reports will be taken.
3. Books must meet the classroom minimum criteria of 120 pages in length and
be at an appropriate grade level.
4. Ten percent of the AR score will be calculated as extra credit test
points. For example, if a student scores
100%, ten extra credit test points will be awarded
90%, nine extra credit test points will be awarded
80%, eight extra credit test points will be awarded
70%, seven extra credit test points are awarded
60%, six extra credit test points will be awarded.
Scores below 60% earn zero points for the student.
5. All tests must be taken by May 15th to be counted.
6. Challenging Books (see class criteria) may also used. The same
percentage is awarded. If a book counts as two, the points are doubled; if
a books counts as three, the points are tripled.
7. Tests for extra credit MUST be taken in my room with my supervision and
permission.
I reserve the right to alter or eliminate this program as I deem fit.
