Parent Information For Applying For Services -
I strongly urge each parent to look into these and apply for whatever best
suits the needs of your family! We will also address some of these at each
Spring IEP Meeting.
DMRS
DMRS provides community-based sevices for Tennesseans with Mental
Retardation. Services may include: residential services, day services,
employment, family support, behavior support, personal assistance.
Call: 1-800-308-2586 ext. 1980 TO GET ON THE WAITING LIST!!!! This can be
done at any time, but must be done in order to transition from our program
to ANY adult service provider (including CDS and Vocational Rehabilitation).
Conservatorship
At age 18, your son or daughter becomes a legal adult and may make their own
decisions (without your imput). If you have concerns that your son/daughter
is not capable of making "important" decisions for themselves, before your
child turns 17 you need to check into becoming your child's conservator.
This will give you a say in medical, financial, adult placement, and legal
issues that may arise after your son/daughter turns 18. This is both a
lengthy and costly ($600.00+) process, and one which does require a court
appearance in front of a judge. Please call your attorney to find out
more. If you would like the name of an attorney, I can provide you with
this information. Remember not to wait until your child turns 18 or the
process will be much more difficult.
