How does a flexible library program work?

Our library operates on a "flexible schedule" which means--no more waiting
until library day--your child can come to the library whenever they want or
need! Teachers can schedule lessons on information literacy that go with
what is being learned in the classroom. Small groups, individuals and
classes can all be working at the same time!

What does my child learn about in the library?

Research shows that children learn best when they can access information at
the point-of-need. Our library program is an extension of the classroom.
Information skills are taught and learned within the context of the
classroom curriculum. All students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade
participate in research units planned cooperatively with teachers and the
librarian so the students can learn library skills while they are learning
curriculum-related information. This integration strengthens the teaching
and learning process so students develop the skills necessary to locate,
analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas.

How many books can students check out?

Kindergarten students are allowed to check out one book. All students in
First and Second grades are allowed to check out two books and an
additional book if the teacher requests it for an assignment or book report.
Third through Fifth grade students are allowed to checkout three books.

When are library books due?

All students learn the library pledge, "My book is due when I've read it
through". This means that if a student finishes the book one day, they can
return it the next day and select a new book. For older students, if the
book is needed for a book report, it can be kept until the report is
complete. The automated library system sets the circulation time for 14
days. We request that students return their books in a timely manner as
other students may be waiting for the book.

Why are overdue notices sent home?

Overdue Notices are sent home with students approximately twice a month.
The purpose is to remind the students that if they are finished with the
book, it should be returned. If the students is still reading the book,
then they can simply come to the library and have it renewed. If you ever
have a question about an ovedue notice that has been sent home, please
contact the library.

Why are prices listed on the overdue notice?

The price of the book is listed as a part of the computerized system that we
use. It is not a fine for an overude book--we do not charge fines for late
books in elementary school. It is simply there just to inform the parent
about the replacement cost if the book cannot be found.

What if a student loses or damages a library book?

Lost books must be paid for in order to clear your child's records and allow
them to check out another book. Please send money to cover the cost of the
book (contact the library staff for replacement cost or refer to the overdue
notice). Damaged books must be evaluated by the library staff to determine
if damages are minor (requiring repairs) or whether a full replacement must
be purchased. Please contact the library for damage costs on books. Any
checks may be made payable to "Anderson Elementary."

Do you have any books for parents?

Absolutely! Our collection currently has numerous titles relating to
parenting. We have many wonderful books for you to share with your child to
address behaviors or life changing events that may be affecting school or
home. Parents are always welcome to call, stop by or email the librarian
