This is my 15th year teaching at Bowie High School. I am married to Peter
Hutcheson, a philosophy professor at Texas State University. I have 4
children: 3 in college (Vanessa-class of 05, and Jessica-class of 07, anbd
Alyssa class of 09), and 1 in middle school (a seventh-grader named Wesley).
I think that science is the ULTIMATE interdisciplinary adventure!
I am the sponsor of the Science Club (which meets Wednesday mornings in my
room). I coach the UIL Science team (in Biology).
Biology is the study of living things. It is a field of knowledge that is
constantly growing: new discoveries are in the paper every day. As a good
citizen and a productive member of society I want you to be scientifically
literate. This means you should be able to read about a biology topic or
issue in the paper, understand what it is about, recognize how it might
affect your life or your loved ones, and vote wisely. As future college
students, you need to uderstand the major overarching themes of Biology and
know how the details of topics such as the cell cycle and cell
differentiation, cellular energy, bioinformatics, evolution and ecology fit
into these themes and are connected to each other. Biology is the meaning
of life!
