How are tardies counted when bad weather delays the car drop-off line?
Students are not tardy even if they arrive in the classroom after
7:45.
If you are running late can your child still get a school breakfast?
The cafeteria stops serving breakfast at 7:50.
Should the student point to the words they are reading?
We encourage the students not to point to the words they are
reading, as this will slow down their fluency rate. However, if
a child is having trouble with tracking the words, they can use
their finger to point to what they are reading.
What kind of treats do you recommend for birthdays?
We recommend bringing cookies or individually wrapped treats as
these are easy to pass out and clean up. You may still bring the
traditional cupcakes if that is what you prefer. We eat birthday
treats during our recess time at 12:45 PM.
Does the library have the AR program in place?
No. This is a computer reading program we do not offer. We do,
however, pull children for enrichment and remediation during
FLIGHT time.
Can we get copies of the timed math facts for students to practice at home?
We do not send home copies of our timed math facts as many
students will then just memorize the page instead of actually
learn the math facts. We recommend going to the 2nd grade website
and clicking on the "links" icon. You will find a few websites
that allow you to create your own worksheets for addition and
subtraction math. You can also use flashcards to practice the
math facts at home. These are both great resources for
helping your child learn their math facts.
Does a child miss recess if they were working hard and still didn't finish?
It is based on teacher discretion. If a child was truly working
hard and doing their best work and still weren't able to finish
their assignment, they usually will not have to go to study hall.
Why do we not have PE every day?
The standard in Round Rock ISD is to offer art, music and
physical education opportunities. Specials periods are 50
minutes. One day is art, one day is music, and two days are PE.
The fifth day is a combination of art or music and PE. Although
children may not have PE daily, they do have opportunity for
physical play daily at recess.
How are you assessing the students?
We use many different forms of assessments throughout the year.
Some examples are teacher made tests, district made benchmarks,
teacher observation, anecdotal records, checklists, performance
assessments, and students daily work.
How do the students earn positive points?
The students earn positive points by following the SOAR
agreements and doing their personal best at different points
throughout the day. When the teacher spots a child following
directions, staying on task, working quietly, bringing back their
homework and folder, etc., the child may earn a positive point.
The points are given at each individual teacher's discretion.
Will the grade level website and newsletter be updated on a particular day?
We will update them weekly, but there is not one set day. As a
goal, we aim to have it updated by Tuesday of each week since
that is the day for communication with parents by way of Tuesday
folders.
What is reading passage versus assigned reading for homework?
A reading passage is a worksheet with a story and comprehension
questions. This comes home on Tuesdays. The assigned reading is
a leveled book for your child that comes home on Mondays.
How are visitors regulated entering and leaving the school?
Visitors must check in at the office and present driver's license
to receive a sticker. Anyone seen in the hallway or outside
without this will be asked and/or escorted to the office to
comply with this safety feature.
Do you prevent sharing or trading of food at lunch or snack?
Yes, we discourage sharing any snacks in our classrooms. At
lunch, your child is supervised by lunch room monitors, not their
classroom teacher.
What time of day is best to miss for a doctor or dentist appointment?
If an appointment cannot be scheduled after school, the best
times include your child's lunch time or recess to avoid missing
instruction.
What is my child's daily schedule?
Please ask your child's teacher, as specials and library days
differ.
What are district tests and why didn't we hear about those?
There are benchmarks and reading assessments throughout the
year. The math diagnostic given at the beginning of the year is
a pre-assessment. The district's testing calendar can be found at
http://www.roundrockisd.org under Assessment and Audit Services,
testing calendar. There is no study preparation needed for
these, as they guide our planning and instruction. Therefore,
parent contact is not necessary. During conferences, we will
review the reading assessments with you. The math pre-test is
given again at the end of the year, and reviewed with you to show
your child's growth.
What is the potty procedure to ensure child's safety?
Children usually are sent in pairs to the restroom. We also take
whole class restroom breaks. The restroom doors at Brushy Creek
Elementary are open 100% of the time and there are classrooms
directly across from them. There is always support staff present
on campus to assist in monitoring these types of things to ensure
your child's safety.
How is the scientific process defined at second grade level?
We align closely with the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival
terms used in fifth grade: Problem, Materials, Hypothesis,
Procedures, Observations/Results, Conclusion.
