About The Teacher
Ms. Katie Maybaum was born in Loveland, Colorado and lived there until she was in 5th grade. She moved to Tempe, Arizona in the 6th grade where she stayed until graduating from high school. Ms. Maybaum received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, Summa Cum Laude at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. She moved to Round Rock, Texas in 2002 and began teaching at Cedar Valley Middle school as a long term substitute in two 6th grade world cultures classes and a 7th grade science class. Ms. Maybaum began teaching 5th grade at Brushy Creek Elementary in 2003. She is qualified to teach all general education classes (math, reading, writing, social studies, and science) but is now teaching a Science/Language Arts class. Ms. Maybaum has taught all of the 5th grade curriculum and can answer questions about math and social studies. Ms. Maybaum is also qualified as an ESOL teacher. In 2005 Ms. Maybaum signed on to be the campus' science mentor teacher in the ACC Science Collaborative. She attended over 100+ hours of workshops and conferences each year to become more science savy. After 4 years, she has stepped down and another campus member, Mrs. Janish, will be taking her place this year. During the summer of 2007, 2008, and 2009 Ms. Maybaum was selected to go to LiftOff, a NASA program that explored robotics in space, future exploration of Mars, and celestial travelers with 40+ other teachers from around the United States. In July of 2009, Ms. Maybaum was selected for a team of 4 teachers to design an experiment and fly it on the Zero-G aircraft which simulates weightlessness. She was able to experience Lunar gravity, Martian gravity and Zero-gravity during 42 parabolas (about 20 minutes of total weightlessness) while conducting two updated experiments from Christa McAulliffe's Lost Lessons during the Challenger mission that exploded on take off in the 1980s. Ms. Maybaum will certainly share her experiences of this 10-day Ellington Field experience with her students. On top of teaching, Ms. Maybaum has been a student council sponsor since 2004 and was able to get a recycling bin placed on our campus during the 2005-2006 school year. Our campus is now a recycling fiend and has built a fabulous recycling program. She also leads a church youth group on the weekends. Ms. Maybaum is an avid reader and is sadly addicted to Mt. Dew. Soda cannot be exchanged for good grades! :P Ms. Maybaum is proud and privileged to be able to teach each child that enters her room. She hopes to inspire and encourage each student to do their personal best and become a life-long learner with interactive and thought- provoking lessons.
