Ned is cooking a steak on the grill. He knows that if he cooks it for five
minutes, the steak will be medium rare. If Ned cooks his steak for eight
minutes, it will be medium. The longer Ned cooks the steak, the more well
done it becomes.
Maurice, a chef, receives orders that tell him how customers want their
steaks cooked. He knows that if a customer wants a steak to be medium rare,
he must cook it for five minutes.
Maurice believes that the way a customer wants his steak cooked determines
how long the steak stays on the grill. Ned believes that how long you cook a
steak determines whether it is medium rare, medium, etc. Assuming that both
Ned and Maurice cook steak at the same temperature, whose thinking is
correct? Justify your answer.
This challenge is due October 26, 2005.
Good luck!
