Weekly Update – Nov. 16th – 24th

** This newsletter will take us through Thanksgiving!

MATH

We ended last week with our test over multiplication.  The kids did a really great job with multi-digit multiplication.  I am proud of them!!  We are now ready to move on to long division.  This will take most of the time until Thanksgiving break.

READING/WRITING;

We have completed our class Top Ten Project.  Each student completed one or two of the Desert Lizard pages.  They decided to order them by size.  We focused on the size of the lizard, appearance and special features for each lizard.  Now it is time for them to select a topic they would like to research.  I have asked them to try to select a topic by Monday.  You might want to talk to them about this over the weekend.  Some questions you might as them about their topic could be:

       *can you find research on this topic

       *how would you order your top ten items

       *who is your audience for this article

       *is your topic to BIG – do you need to narrow it down

        (for example, Lizards of the World narrowed down to Lizards of

         Desert)
We found with the topic we picked that we changed our direction after we had some research completed. That will happen to them as well. Bottom line they just need a good researchable topic rather than a topic that will lend itself to opinion. I was really pleased how they let the research guide some of their decisions when we did the class project. They did a great job!
