November-December 2009 AT A GLANCE
LANGUAGE ARTS (READING & WRITING)
5TH GRADE CLASSWORK
HISTORICAL FICTION is the main focus the next two months. Students will walk
through World War II history, along with connecting the book Milkweed by
Jerry Spinelli to the time period.
BIOGRAPHYS from the World War II time period will also be explored.
POWER LINES because there is power in words- Students continue to search for
GOOD/EXCELLENT/POWERFUL examples of writing and bring them to class to share.
This will count.
POETRY TUESDAY- Each week students will explore, analysis, and begin to
create various types of poetry.
Each week students will plan, write, and research for the audio/video podcast.
The 2nd audio/video podcast is planned for December.
5TH GRADE HOMEWORK
The Blog Project 2 includes reading books on 5th grade level with a variety
of genres, writing 2 reflections from two NEW different genres, accomplish 25
AR points, and logging the information. Be sure to return your self-
evaluated "The Blog Project Rubric" on December 11th!
MATH
5TH GRADE CLASSWORK
NEW MATH CONCEPTS THE SECOND NINE WEEKS INCLUDE:
• Algebraic relationships- using tables, symbols , rate of change,
perimeter, area, formulate equations from problem situations
• Measurement – conversions (customary, metric), proportional,
area,perimeter, volume, circles (radius, diameter and circumference),
estimate, evaluate reasonableness of results, select and use
appropriate units, tools or formulas to measure and solve problems
involving length, area, time, temperature, volume and mass/weight
• Understand data and graphing
• Problem-solving processes are ongoing

Individual work - Select from a menu, opportunities to use each new concept

- Review TEKS that will be addressed the 2nd 9 weeks.
