What Tools Are in Our Writers' Toolbox?

Binoculars - making a blurry sentence clear by adding information 
(describing)
Adding Details - add information, not just words, to make our writing 
interesting
Snapshots-  Adding a snapshot of what a character might look like in a story.
Thoughtshots - Adding a thoughtshot of what the character was thinking in 
the story.
Extended Endings - 1.  Memory of an event  2.  The main character's 
feelings  3.  The main character's hopes/wishes  4.  A decision/defining 
action
Ba-Da-Bing Sentences - The writer describes a feeling by including a 
sentence that says, " As I walked..., I saw..., and I thought..."
Stretch "Boring" Sentences- Instead of writing:  The dog barked.  Stretch 
your sentence to add more detail: The German Shepherd barked loudly at the 
mailman in the street because he thought she was a robber.

Story Maps- help make our writing more focused.  We have to make sure our 
stories have a problem and a solution.  Also, we need to make sure we can 
GIST or tell the main idea of our story!
