Mrs. Tremaine and Mrs. Hartsfield visit classrooms on a consistent basis to 
teach guidance lessons with whole classes.  Lessons focus on such topics as:

Respect, Cooperation, Responsibility, Self-control, Compassion, 
Trustworthiness, Perseverance, Honesty, Self-reliance, College, and Careers

Topics may vary depending upon the specific needs of a classroom and grade 
level.

During the months of August and September, we will focus on introduction of 
the counselors and their roles and promoting the value of higher education.

EDUCATION. GO GET IT.

September 27 - October 1: “Education. Go Get It Week!”  
During this week, counselors, teachers and community members will provide 
information and encouragement to all students with regards to pursuing post 
secondary education.

Throughout the year at Cactus Ranch Elementary, an emphasis on higher 
education and its connection to future careers is integrated into the 
curriculum.

Below is a list of different ways that CRE is working to promote higher 
education during E.G.G.I. week and throughout the school year:

*Guidance Lessons – The counselors will provide guidance lessons on 
college/careers to every grade level.  The promotion of post-secondary 
education will be emphasized in guidance lessons throughout the school 
year.  Helping the students to connect their current learning with future 
careers will also be a part of year-long guidance lessons.

*College T-Shirt Day – Every Thursday students and staff are encouraged to 
wear a college t-shirt.

*Where Will College Take You? – A map of the U.S. will be displayed during 
the school year.  School faculty will mark on the map where they attended 
college.  Students will be encouraged to find where different teachers and 
administrators went to college, and reflect on where they might choose to go 
to college.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME...

You Are Your Children’s Guiding Star

Success in college means a world of opportunities. College is possible and 
affordable.  Financial aid is available for everyone. It’s never too early 
to start planning! Here are some tips to prepare your children for college:

*Believe in your children. Reward your children with praise. Give your
children positive encouragement and validate their ideas and accomplishments.

*Read to your children. Keep reading materials like newspapers and
magazines handy so your children can see you and other family members
reading. Read stories and poems to your children and discuss the pictures.
Make regular trips to the library and sign your children up for the summer
reading program.

*Set a positive example for your children. Children are very observant
and often mimic the actions of those they look up to. Talk to your child 
every day, ask questions, and be prepared to answer their questions.

*Nurture healthy habits within your children. Take your children to the
doctor and dentist regularly. Obtain regular vision and hearing check-ups for
them. Make sure they have their immunizations. Encourage exercise and
require plenty of rest. Provide a balanced diet for your children.

*Get involved! Be actively involved in your children’s education by learning
about their school and its staff. Get to know your child’s teacher and 
become a partner with the school by volunteering and joining parent 
organizations.

*Make your home a positive learning environment. Take your children
to parks, free musical and theater events, museums, and the zoo. Take walks
and talk about the people and things they see. Play card and board games with
them. Limit TV watching and encourage shows like PBS’s “Sesame Street.”  Set 
up a quiet study area in your home and designate a time for homework
and reading.

*Start saving money now! Even if you can only save a few dollars a week,
it’s never too early to start saving for your children’s future.
