Homework

Homework is an opportunity for students to take responsibility for their
education. This will help them to prepare for what will be asked of them as
they go on to middle school next year. The assignments will be consistent
each week as seen in the Homework Schedule.

• Homework will be written down every Friday for the upcoming week, in
student planner.
• Homework is taken for a grade.
• Homework must be turned in on the due date, except in the case of an
emergency (accident, illness, etc…).
• If an assignment is late:
-A conduct mark will be given on the Tuesday Folder for each missing
assignment.
-The student will be asked to attend study hall during their recess to
make up the assignment. Study hall is not viewed as a punishment, but as an
opportunity to get caught up on missing work.
-10 points will be taken off of an assignment for every day that the
assignment is late.
• If you child has questions about the assignment, bring your child to
school early so that they can get any questions answered from myself, another
5th grade teacher, or another student.

Planners: The students are asked to purchase a planner from the PTA at the
beginning of the school year. These are the same planners that the middle
school uses to help the students stay organized. In the past they have
proven to be a useful tool in helping the students keep track of assignments.
They also provide a way for the parents and the teacher to communicate, if
necessary.
• The planner must be signed by a parent each evening. When you sign the
planner, you are saying that your child has completed all of the homework
assignments. Please do not sign it for the week in advance.
• If you would like to write me a brief note, please feel free to write it
in the planner.
• The planner will be checked each day to ensure that there is a signature,
and also to check for parent communication.
• If the planner has not been signed, your child will be asked to sit out 5
minutes of recess.
• Please keep in mind that it is your child’s responsibility to bring their
planner and homework to you. This is so that you can see the assignments are
completed and therefore you can in good faith sign the planner.

Reading Log/AR Points: Reading is very important for developing vocabulary,
as well as increasing fluency. Your child should be reading books that are
close to their reading level to ensure that reading growth will occur.

• Fifth graders will be expected to keep a reading log of the books they are
reading each evening on their reading log. Your child will need to write down
the book they have read, the amount of minutes read, and the exact page
numbers. Your signature and your child’s signature are required to verify
your child’s reading. The reading log will be due each Friday and will be
taken for a grade.
• Students are required to maintain 25 AR points per grading period. The
students must pass tests in order to gain points. Students are expected to
have at least 2.78 AR points per week in order to achieve the minimum
expectation. If the student does not reach the minimum standard weekly, they
will be expected to attend study hall until the expectation is reached.

Spelling/Vocabulary: Students will receive one spelling list every 2 weeks.
They will be tested over the words' spelling the first week and the words'
spelling/vocabulary the second week. A copy of the Spelling/Vocabulary
Homework Menu should be found in the student's homework binder.
