Acrostic Poetry Formula:
1. Title-any subject
2. Use each letter of the title as first letter of the line.
3. The lines must have something to do with the title
4. May or may not rhyme
Class example:
Sister
Sitting up and talking
In my mind often
Sharing clothes
Talking all the time
Ever on the phone
Right there when I need her
Technology extensions:
1. Highlight the first letter in the line. Change font, size and style. Make
the title match.

2. Import a graphic to illustrate poem.
Cinquain Poetry Formula:
1. Write a noun
2. Below that write two adjectives
3. On the third line write three verbs that the noun does
4. On the fourth line write a thought about the noun
5. Last write a synonym of the noun
Class example:
Tree
shady, bare
branching, blooming, growing
they eat your kites

Technology extensions:
1. Center lines on document
2. Utilize thesaurus under Edit, writing tools to come up with different synonyms
3. Create a watermark
Diamond Poetry Formula:
1. Subject (one word)
2. Two adjectives describing the subject
3. Three participles describing actions (-ing)
4. Four nouns associated with subject
5. Three participles showing change in subject
6. Two adjectives describing altered subject
7. A word opposite of subject
Class example
Youth
exuberant, wild
troublemaking, dating, partying
hair spray, dances, music, cars
maturing, graduating, marrying
responsible, strict
Adult

1. Center every line of poem
2. Make sure the fourth line extends past other lines
3. Highlight the whole poem.
4. Change font, size and style
5. Add graphics to illustrate poem
Five Sense Poetry Formula:
Step 1: Pick an emotion-love, fear, anger...
Step 2: Six lines
1. Tell what color the emotion is
2. Tell what it sounds like
3. Tell what it tastes like
4. Tell what it smells like
5. Tell what it looks like
6. Tell how it makes you feel
Class example:
Fear
Fear is the color of the night.
It sounds like a wicked laugh.
It tastes like a glass of water.
And smells like burning tar.
Fear looks like a dark cave.
And makes you feel insecure.
Technology extensions:
1. Highlight words in the poem. Copy and paste the poem on the page.
2. Edit and use writing tools. Use the thesaurus to find descriptive
words.
3. Change one word in every line. Compare the two poems.
Fear
Fear is the hue of the night.
It sounds like a fiendish laugh.
It tastes like a glass of water.
And smells like scorching tar.
Fear looks like a murky cave.
And makes you feel vulnerable.
ABC Poetry Formula:
Begin with any letter in the alphabet. List the next successive letters in
the alphabetical order.
Each line must begin with that letter and may consist of one or several
words. The final line is a statement beginning with any
letter.
Class example:
Whales play
Xylophones
Yearly in the
Zoo talent show
They won first place!
Technology extensions:
1. Highlight the first letter in the line. Change font, size and style. Make
it stand out.
2. You can use the thesaurus to fine word. Edit to writing tools. Select the
thesaurus. Type in the beginning letter and a vowel. Select look up for a
list of words to choose from.
Thesaurus Poetry Formula:
1. Select a word
2. List synonyms given in the thesaurus.
3. Using these words create a poem around the concept or theme
suggested by your collection
4. You must use at least three of the synonyms and your poem must
have a controlling idea or image which is maintained
throughout the poem.
Class example:
The joke was over
The laughter died
The trick was done
And I had been a
fool for the last time
They play their little tricks
They jest
They quip
They pull your leg
It's all in fun

1. Use the thesaurus under Edit, Writing tools to make your list of synonyms.
2. Add a paint window. Draw original graphics to go along with the theme of
the poem.
Anthropomorphic Poetry Formula:
*Giving human characteristics to non-human things.
Lines- 1. A statement of who you are.
2. (An absolute constriction) a phrase.
3. Beginning with my describing yourself.
4. by giving physical details
5. Another statement of who you are
6. A participal phrase ending with
7. an ing or ed telling what
8. you can do or are doing
Class example:
The Mistreated Sofa
I am an old overstuffed sofa
My covering torn and dirty
My legs broken and uneven
My armrests missing
I am supposed to support an entire family
Holding all while watching T.V.
Eating leftovers spilled on me
Knowing I don't have much longer to be
I know I soon will be on my way to the dump!
Technology extensions:
1. Type poem, highlight and change font, size and style.
2. Create a paint box. Draw an original illustration to go with your poem.
(Make sure and give your object human characteristics.)
Prepositional Poetry Formula:
1. Title
2. At least 20 lines
3. Each line should begin with a preposition and end with a noun or
pronoun;
Class example:
For a great day go
Out the door,
In the car,
Out the garage,
Past the school,
Up the hill,
Near the church,
Through the canyon,
To the ski lifts,
From the car,
Towards the lifts,
On the lift,
Around the poles,
Down the hill,
Through the trees,
Past the boulder,
Upon the trail,
Under the lift,
Over the moguls,
Off the jump,
Through the air,
Towards the end,
Wipe out bad and that's the end
Technology extensions:
1. Use a paint box to create a map.
2. Make a visual representation of your poem.
Concrete Poetry Formula:
1. Select a word.
2. Merge verbal with graphic.
3. Turn the word into a picture, which creates a poem that can be seen
as well as read.
Technology Extensions:
1. Utilize paint tools, solid colors, gradients, and patterns.
2. Make holiday isomorphs. Halloween and Christmas words are
excellent for making concrete poetry.
