Reading-In reading we are studying characters in some of our favorite books!
We are looking at how they act internally and how they change througout the
books. As you read at home, please notice these things as well!
Writing- In writing we just celebrated our Revising unit and are now working
on Authors as Mentors. One of the best ways to learn new things is by
studying people who already do it! We will be looking at authors we love and
seeing what we can learn from them. You child brought home a 'tiny topics'
notebook and should be writing story ideas (seed stories) in them!
Math- We continue to problem solve and are also working on extending
patterns. When problem
solving students are expected to show their work and explain their thinking.
We solve two different
ways because in math it is very important to check your answer! We are also
working on extending
patterns. For example if: One dog is 4 legs. 2 dogs are 8 legs. How many
legs will there be if there
are 5 dogs? We are also working on time and fractions. In 2nd grade we
work on telling time to the 5 minute mark. Please read clocks with your
child at home and look at the homework options for fun and interactive time
websites!
Science- In science we are studing changes. This includes the water cycle,
seasons, and the moon. Right now we are learning about how the temperaute
changes with each season and what clothing we wear in each season. Ask your
child their favorite season and have them draw a picture of them doing an
activity they can do in it!
Social Studies- We are studying history and famous Americans! In February
students will work with a partner to research a famous American of their
choice to study and present. We are working on making timelines and thinking
about WHY someone is famous! You can talk about this at home too! What
makes someone famous?
