Week of February 8, 2010
Dear Parents,
AMAZING ASIA…The presentations on China and India by our second grade parents were so interesting and informative. We loved hearing first hand about the culture, customs, geography, language, clothing, music, and food of China and India. Second grade teachers and students want to thank Rajini Ram, Hongyan Guo, Zhijie Xiong, Supriya Shah, Wendy Shi, Helen Gu, Haiying Wang, Radha Maganty, Hemal Shah, and Lisbeth Mathew for putting forth such effort in preparing and presenting these wonderful Power Point presentations. In addition, lots of artifacts and cultural items were on display. We thank you for the experience you gave us.
A WORD FROM OUR COUNSELOR.....Hi there Comets! Congratulations to all students who received a "Trustworthy" sticker during the month of January! February is known as the month of love, so why not spread love and kindness to your friends?? During the month of January, our character trait is FRIENDSHIP.
This month, your teachers will be looking for good examples of friendship. If you help a friend in need or if your teacher catches you treating your friends in class with respect, kindness, and empathy then you will receive a "friendship" sticker to wear all day telling everyone that you exhibited our character trait of the month!
Good Luck Comets and remember....CHARACTER COUNTS AT CANYON CREEK!!
TO CLARIFY VOLUNTEER vs VISITOR…. Just a reminder that it is necessary to complete an online application each year if you are planning to do any volunteering in your child’s classroom. This is a RRISD directive. You must renew this application yearly. Without this volunteer status, you cannot be a parent reader, classroom volunteer for special days, field trip chaperone, etc. Visitors not having volunteer status are allowed to eat lunch with their children in the cafeteria, but are not permitted to work in any way with individual students. With so many volunteer activities coming up such as Problem Solving Activity day next Friday, Robolab in March, and weekly parent readers, I want to avoid having any disappointed parents. Becky, our Registrar is having to turn parents away if they do not have Volunteer status. If you stop by the office or the library, they will be happy to guide you through that process or you can go to https://hrsapp.roundrockisd.org/appentry/. We love and appreciate our parent volunteers, so please take a minute to complete the application if you have not done so already.
THINK, CREATE, BUILD … That’s what we’ll be doing Friday, February 12, as we problem solve our way through some activities with chocolate. The children always enjoy this event as they attempt to build bridges, boats, and tunnels, all in an effort to support the ever popular…chocolate. Thank you to my parent volunteers, Mrs. Galley, Mrs. Unite, Mrs. Chauhan, Mrs. Risko, Mrs. Lu, and Mrs. Goff. Volunteers, please rmember to sign in and plan to be in our classroom at 8:15. The activities should take us right to 9:45, just in time for Specials. We look forward to seeing you and having you help us stretch our thinking.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS, IT’S ROBOLAB TIME, A NOTE FROM PTA…It's time to introduce your super second-grade students to Robolab this spring! If you would like to help students follow simple lego plans to create very fun projects, please email lavonnawrites@hotmail.com with your teacher’s name, day, and shift (or availability if you can fill in as needed), your name, and phone number. Each class attends for 2 days. Please see the schedule below for your classroom day and time. Plan to arrive 10 -15 minutes early to review the handouts. Please respond by Tuesday March 2nd and I’ll email the complete volunteer schedule March 3rd. Thank you very much for your support! Lavonna Gonzalez, 512-577-2416

HEARTS AND MORE...Our Valentine bags will be decorated and ready for deliveries on Monday, so send in those cards and treats! Since Valentine’s Day is one of our three official party days, we do not have to follow the usual dietary restrictions so candy treats are welcome. The children can’t wait to see what treasures await them in their Valentine bags.
A REMINDER…Our Valentine’s Day party is Friday, February 12, from 1:45-2:45. This is a low key party, with the main attraction being the opening of their Valentines. If you plan to drop by, remember to sign in at the office to pick up your visitors pass before coming to the classroom. As always, thank you for finding child care for your preschoolers.
“GET WILD ABOUT READING!”… Our Library Spring Reading Incentive program is in full swing. Be sure to return all completed and signed six –hour tracking forms by February 23. Remember, it is okay to “double dip”, by using your book buck reading hours and recording these minutes both in our planners and on the library incentive tracking form.
Have a nice weekend.
Sincerely,
Pat
