Pena's Points

Weeks of December 14, 2009

Dear Parents,

HO, HO, HO…Wow, can you believe that the holiday season is just about here? This next week is going to be a busy, but fun. Excitement is certainly in the air!

SHE’S BACK!...The faculty of CCE is happy to welcome Pat Greiner, our second grade teammate, back to work! Pat has been out since the start of the school year having had two knee replacements. Pat is fully recovered and ready to get back to her love of teaching. My second grade teammates and I are delighted to welcome her back to our team!

SO LONG… Not wanting to say goodbye, we say so long. We have been so lucky to have Kathy Dixon, a wonderfully talented, experienced teacher on our second grade team this year while Pat Greiner was recovering. She has worked hard each and every day to provide a warm, loving learning environment for her students.  We will miss her dearly.

SPELLING…Due to this busy week, we will not be having a spelling test. This is welcome news, I’m sure! We’ll start back up in January.

LUCKY SEVEN WEEK… "Lucky Seven Week" has arrived again. I will check logs on Friday and then open our store for another Book Buck Library Sale Day. Encourage your child to read, read, and read. My Book Buck Library is well stocked with fantastic titles sure to excite your child.

SHOPPING IDEAS?...Most of my students are in need of a new set of colored pencils and glue sticks. These last two weeks we've been busy bees working on a project and our supplies have gotten a major workout. Maybe while you're out and about shopping, you can pick up a new set of colored pencils and a glue stick so we'll all be fully equipped for January.

LIBRARY BOOKS…Have your child bring in all library books for exchange before the holiday vacation.

CHECK YOUR CALENDAR…The parent reader schedule for the start of the second semester is ready to be filled in. Please let me know if you would like to be a parent reader for the spring semester. I’ve only heard from one parent about reading. L As a reminder, please bring in 4-,6 books to read to the class during each of your visits. The children just love guest readers!

READ, READ, READ…Please find time during this busy holiday season to encourage your child to keep reading. It is important for your child to continue developing good reading habits, even when we're on a break from school. I will be checking reading logs on January 8 and will expect the children to have read at least 3 hours from the time I last checked logs on December 18. What a great time to dig out those family favorites to read together!

POLAR EXPRESS DAY…Thursday is Polar Express Day and the children are really looking forward to spending the day in pajamas. Who knows, maybe their teacher might even join them in wearing pj’s too! Things to bring include a pillow, a flashlight, the book Polar Express if you have it, and a couple of books for relaxing reading time. Please send in tennis shoes for recess if your child is planning to wear slippers to school.

SUPPLIES…Thank you to the many parents that will be providing supplies for this week’s Polar Express Day and holiday party. How lucky for all of us to have a class full of generous parents, always eager to help in any way they can. Thank you!

SCIENCE FAIR 2010…Registration is now open for the Science Fair at http://www.canyoncreekpta.com/ScienceFair/sfregister.php.

PARTY…Our class holiday party is on Friday, Dec. 18, 1:45-2:45. All parents are invited to attend. Hope to see you! As another reminder, due to school policy and space limitations, having siblings at the party is not allowed. This is a special time for second graders and their parents so please set up childcare plans early. Contact MaryAnne Hettenhaus at maryanne_hettenhaus@roundrockisd.org  if you wish to participate in the online childcare services during our party.

HOLIDAY WISHES…Hopefully I’ll see you before the holiday break but if not, I wish you and your family the happiest holiday season ever! It has been my pleasure to be a part of your child's academic success this semester. We are worker bees here in second grade, and I hope you too have seen the growth that I see daily. How far we have come since August! I look forward to our second semester together. We have worked hard and deserve a much needed rest. Thank you for your support of what I am so committed to doing here at school.

Happy Holidays!

Warmly,

Sheri
