Lots of learning yet again this week. We finished up learning all about apples and moved right into pumpkins and Halloween activities. The highlight of the week was definitely pumpkin math. Thanks to all the families who donated supplies and/or donated their time for this fun activity. Next week we will continue to finish up some things with spiders, discuss fall and begin working on things for Thanksgiving.
REPORT CARDS: On Tuesday your child will bring home their his/her formal report card. Please take time to review this information, and remember that every child is a unique individual. You see one child at home and we see another child here at school. The two portraits combined are the complete student. Please do not compare your child to peers and/or siblings. DO NOT BE ALARMED if your child is receiving 1s in academic areas. A 1 indicates that the skill is performed with direct teacher guidance. For the first nine weeks of school almost everything we do is with direct teacher guidance. If there is an area of concern, I would have discussed it with you during our parent conference. An academic area with no grade assigned is an area that we did not assess this first nine weeks. A 1 in the behavior section is something you should discuss with your child. If there is a behavior with a 1 assigned to it that is an area of growth for your child. Lastly, the papers inside the envelope are yours to keep but please sign the report card envelope and return it promptly. These envelopes will be used for the entire year. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
READING GROUPS: This week your child will begin reading groups in class. We will be spending a couple of days discussing how reading groups work and letting the children know what we expect during reading groups. We will even practice what the children who are not meeting with the teacher will be doing to ensure that all students are actively involved with meaningful learning! Each group will have a focus that is appropriate to the children in that group. For expample students who need to work on story comprehension will focus on that, students who need to practice the alphabet and sounds will practice that, and we will all be practicing how to handle the books that we read. Please note: As we are beginning this week practice books will not be sent home yet. I will email when we begin that phase of our groups! I try to only send books home to practice after your child has mastered our teaching point for that book.
HALLWAY DECORATING: Volunteers are needed Wednesday morning to help decorate the kindergarten hallway by putting up a pumpkin vine and attaching our freshly painted pumpkins. If you can help volunteer please come to the kindergarten hall Wednesday at 8:30 am. The more the merrier. We will also be asking for volunteers after the Thanksgiving holiday to decorate our hall for the winter holidays.
MONTHLY CHARACTER TRAIT: Responsibility. Students will be working very hard to earn that special sticker.
CCE’s 1st OUTREACH DRIVE FOR THIS YEAR: Will benefit Hill Country Community Ministries and run from Nov. 2-13. Donations needed are bar soap, laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo and toothpaste (full or travel size). Please place all items in the container located in the main hallway.
