Pre-AP Geography

Description

World Geography provides students the opportunity to study the interaction
of people and their physical environment in the major areas of the World.
Content introduces the students to the world of geographers, their unique
vocabulary, tools and methodologies. Students acquire an understanding of
the physical setting of the earth, locate and study different landforms and
regions of the world, learn how people and geography impact each other, and
are introduced to urban analysis. Content offers students the opportunity
to put into practice the geographical concepts and skills through critical
thinking applications about the world. It also builds upon what the
students have accumulated throughout the social studies program beginning in
the elementary grades and in the Texas and United States history courses.
The purpose of this Pre-AP course is to prepare our highly motivated
students for the rigorous and fast-paced Advanced Placement classes at the
11th and 12th grade levels. AP classes prepare students for the national
College Board Advanced Placement exams that allow students to earn college
credit.
The Pre-AP student is expected to show a high level of commitment to
learning, do a significant amount of reading and preparation outside of the
classroom, take criticism gracefully, and keep abreast of current events.
This course is designed to broaden analytical thinking and communication
skills. Students will be encouraged to develop the skills necessary for
them to analyze evidence and express an understanding of data in timed essay
writings. Students must be able to demonstrate preparation for college-
oriented writing. Effective note taking will also be stressed and students
are required to keep a notebook that demonstrates effective organization.
The Pre-AP instructor must be allowed to push students to reach competence
levels in higher level thinking and writing which are essential for success
in AP classes.
