The "Drive" for A Legacy of Giving has begun at Caraway Elementary.
We will be collecting cans for the Austin Area Food Bank and gently-used or new coats for the "Coats for Kids" campaign. We will be taking donations at the car rider line or in Mrs. Hohmann's office. We could use all the support we can get! Our deadline is November 20th.
I will take reading calendars until Tuesday, November 3rd if your child did not turn it in on Monday.
We will have an author visit by Phil Bildner on November 5th. Your child has the opportunity to have an autographed copy of one of Phil's books. An order sheet is in the Monday folder. Please fill out and return the proper payment before November 5th. Our class will be visiting the library to listen to Mr. Bildner's presentation at 8:10. The book signing will begin approximately at 9:40 or so. Parents are welcome to visit the author with your child's class.
He will also be holding a writing camp on Friday, November 6th.
Book catalogues for book orders went home today in the Monday folder. All ordering is done online, but books are delivered to the classroom. I will place all orders on Monday, November 9th. Please place all orders online between now and next Monday.
Monday folders went home today. Please remember to sign the Monday folder and return it tomorrow. Please return any paperwork, if applicable.
Also, if your child has a failing grade on any test but is above a 50, you may indicate to me that you would like your child to retake it. Just send a note with the assignment so that I'll know to have him/her retake it. A student may not be able to make up a test if it is from a previous nine weeks, as I am not allowed to go back and change grades from the previous nine weeks.
Planners/assignment books will be written in everyday even if there is no homework. "No homework" will be written in the allotted space. Otherwise, students are responsible for copying items belonging in the planner and returning any necessary homework the very next day.
Reading:
We are going to begin reading procedural texts--recipes, directions, etc. If you have cookbooks you would not mind loaning to us, please send them in with your child. This will help prepare students to write their own procedural text.
Writing:
We are reviewing complete sentences, kinds of sentences, parts of speech. We are specifically concentrating on nouns--common, proper, singular, plural, pronouns and possessives. We are also going to be talking about organization and transition words in procedural texts.
Math:
We are beginning strategies and problem solving for multiplication with 2-digit numbers. We have begun practicing strategies for 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. Students will not be taught one way; rather, students will learn to use various strategies of their own or given by the teacher.
Social Studies:
We have concluded the reading of chapter 4 in our books. We will use this week to learn more about conquistadors by watching a video about Cortes. Students will also be taking notes for an upcoming class project by watching Spanish Missions in Texas. We will begin a brochure project inviting others to join our mission.
