Mrs. Caballero's Newsletter
Week of May 18th
On Friday we will have Field Day. This is a fun filled afternoon of games and
activities outside. Your child will need to wear/bring sunscreen, clothes appropriate
for the weather and a water bottle with their name on it. Water bottles are
NOT sold in the cafeteria so they will need one from home.
Please return the Spring Evidence of Learning form if you have not done so already. I
will make a parent copy (pink) and send it home in next Monday's (really Tuesday,
5/26) folder.
We will have a school holiday next Monday! Enjoy your 3 day Memorial weekend!
This week in Mrs. C's class...
Reading:
This week, The Soap Surfers and Bluebonnets will be reading "James and the Giant
Peach" for their novel study. The Great White Sharks and Bevos will be comparing and
constrasting two stories, "Dinosaurs Travel" and "It's Probably Good Dinosaurs are
Extinct".
We will be focusing on comprehension when reading non-fiction texts and completing
Reader's Response on a daily basis. We are working on critical thinking skills and
learning about point of view.
The skills we will be working on for the fourth nine weeks are comprehension,
context clues and inferencing. We will also continue to read silently (silent
sustained reading) after lunch for 10-15 minutes independently.
Wednesday Oral Reading Homework:
This week, the yellow reading pocket folder will come home on Wednesday. Please
sign. This week we will have free choice oral reading. Please write the title of the
book and number of minutes your child reads, minimum 20 minutes, on the Oral Reading
Log. I know this time of year gets busy. If you would like for your child to
complete their oral reading on another day please feel free to do so and record it on
the folder on Wednesday.
Writer's Workshop/Language Arts:
In Writer's Workshop, we are working on Dinosaur short stories. We will have
different writing prompts each day in which the students are expected to write from
their knowledge of Dinosaur facts.
Spelling:
The Spelling Rule this week is the Floss rule.
If a one syllable base word ends in the (f), (l) or (s) sound immediately after a
short vowel, the (f) sound is spelled ff, the (l) sound is spelled ll and the (s)
sound is spelled ss.
1. grass
2. chess
3. thrill
4. dwell
5. sniff
6. staff
7. still
8. mess
9. hiss
10. scoff
Math:
In Math, we will begin a short unit/review on probability and graphing. Today we
did an activity where we guessed the probability of choosing a baseball out of a
basket filled with baseball, basketball, soccer ball, and football erasers. We made a
chart and did a tally of how many times we pulled out each type of ball. We talked
about more likely and least likely, i.e. Am I more likely to pull out a baseball than
a basketball? We will continue working on this skill for the week. No math homework
today.
Social Studies/Science:
We began a new science unit on Dinosaurs. We went to the computer lab last Friday
to do Dino research for our Dinosaur Fact Books. We will continue to work on our
research and learn more about how scientists know that dinosaurs lived long ago, and
what the dinosaurs were like.
Have a great week!
