This will be my ninth year as the teacher in the early childhood program
here at Caraway Elementary. Before that I was the PPCD teacher at
Forest North Elementary in the Round Rock ISD for two years. I also taught
special needs children in the Austin ISD for twelve years.
Michelle Fisher assists me in our classroom. She has worked with me for five
years. Michelle has a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development and has
previously worked at and then managed a local daycare center.
We are both very excited about working here at Caraway Elementary.
Welcome to Caraway Elementary's Early Childhood program.
Our program is based primarily on High/Scope principles, which emphasize the
fact that young children learn best through play. Children, both disabled
and non-disabled, develop social, emotional, cognitive and language skills
as an integral part of the play process. Play is a young child’s work. Being
teachers of three, four and five year olds is exciting and helps keep us
young ourselves! We love playing with children while helping them grow and
develop. In our class, we are all active learners and the belief ALL
CHILDREN CAN LEARN is a reality. We would love to talk to you about our
program.
In addition to High/Scope, another program called STAR will be initiated in
our classroom this year. STAR stands for Strategies for Teaching Based on
Autism Research and our adoption of this program reflects the growing number
of students on the autism spectrum who are being served in our classroom.
STAR is specific skills training based on applied behavioral analysis
techniques and is most often implemented on a one-to-one or very small group
basis. While the STAR program was designed for students on the autism
spectrum, the behaviors taught are appropriate for all our students.
