Ms. Rogers' Class News 11-23-09

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season. If you visit with
family this would be a great time to do the required Oldest Living Interview
at the bottom of this section. It is due in May. I hope you and your family
are able to enjoy the many special events during this time of year.

Please check out the site I sent by e-mail about the Colonial
Williamsburg site.

Parents and adults that wish to volunteer at school must register with
the RRISD district. Please follow the directions to get to the site because
you MUST fill out the background check form (even if you did this last year).
Here is the link. You may have to copy/paste this, but it should take you
directly to the document! They say this could take up to 3 weeks...so, please
complete the form soon.
If you regularly volunteer and your efforts meet any of the following
criteria, please complete the online application by September 14, 2009 at
https://hrsapp.roundrockisd.org/appentry/

Liz McDonald, the parent coordinator wanted to invite all parents to visit
the PRO center. Please read her note below:
Parents,
If you have some spare time,

And want a very low commitment way to help our school,

PLEASE come by room 107 and look for the

Opportunity of the Day

The following is a message Mrs. Hohmann asked us to send to our
parents.

Longhorn Recycling Roundup Contest

Our students at Caraway are always up to something when it comes to the
environment. You can help us win the Keep Austin Beautiful Longhorn Recycle
Round up by sending in a description(s) of events and/or photos of the
amazing stuff the students did last year or are currently doing. Each year
Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB) recognizes schools for their achievements in
environmental projects and activities. For more info on what each award
winning school receives and past recipients click on the following link,
http://www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/longhornrecycleroundup

Your description should include: how many students participated, grade level
(s) of students, and a brief description of the activity. Community education
projects are also included in this category so anything pertaining to the
environment that impacted the community in a small or big way is helpful.
Organizations such as after school groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the YMCA,
and are affiliated with Caraway are also encouraged to send me their event
information. Please email your information to Marci Purcell at
blueyes@austin.rr.com

I know we can win this!

The nurse has asked me to let all parents know that the school
no longer holds extra clothes in case a student needs them, due to spilling
etc. Instead, if you would like your child to have spare clothes in school,
please send some in a zip-lock bag to keep in their backpack.

The following is amessage from our librarian about library volunteers:
Hello!

We are ready to start trying to fill our volunteer schedule this year! You
should have received a flyer in your (giant) Monday folder yesterday with
information about volunteering in the library this year.

The time slots I am looking to fill are:

Tuesday through Friday

7:45-9:15 (classes)

9:15-10:15 (classes)

10:15-11:15 (classes)

11:15-12:00 (no classes)

12:30-1:30 ** Time of greatest need each day (kinder)

1:30-2:45 (no classes)

The times above include times when we will be checking out with classes and
times when we will only have independent check-outs. We need volunteers
equally for both since there are still many projects to be done when classes
are not present. Think about which you'd prefer!

If you are looking to volunteer at the time of your student's library lesson,
I ask that you try to stay for the one shift that occurs at that time. We
have a shortage of library volunteers!

Your student's teacher should be able to let you know the library day/time
period, but you may always call me here in the library and I can help you
with that.

I can't wait to work with you this year and THANK YOU!

dark to read. - Groucho Marx

Parents, please be sure to sign the planner daily and indicate how many
minutes your child has read at home. We expect your child to read for 20
minutes daily. If your child has not brought supplies yet, please send them
this week. Also our class will need to keep a supply of hand sanitizer with
your help. While they are on sale, now is a good time to stock up on extra
supplies for use as needed during the year. A special thank you the the
wonderful parents who have sent in extra supplies.

If you go to the links section of this website you can get to the
math text on line. Your user name is 110and your last name and first initial
in all caps and the last three numbers of your student number. Your
password is your six digit student number. After you log in click on the
premium button to get to lessons. We will be looking at and discussing this
information in class also.

Information about the oldest living relative interview for social
studies follows the closing in this section.

                                           Sincerely,

                                           Diane Rogers

Below is a copy of the Oldest Living Relative Interview that
the students are required to complete at some time during the school year
for social studies. Feel free to add any other questions that you wish to as
this is personal for your family. It will be due in early May. This is a an
opportunity for your child to learn and record some personal family history
and keep for their own records. It may be done in any format such as a
letter written to the child, a video tape, or written by the student.
Hopefully this will spark an interest in family history for your child and
it will become an important keepsake to them. Our focus this year in social
studies is American History and this is a subject that I love to teach. I
appreciate it when students bring in objects, books, or other information
about the topics we are studying. I am always ready to give extra credit
when it is deserved.
