Homework

Each student will have the following homework:

Take Home Reader: read to a grown up each evening, out loud. To
get additional practice, read to your baby brother or sister, aunts
and uncles, grandmas and grandpas, patient neighbors! Return it to
school in the bag in the folder on Thursday, to read orally to the
teacher and get one for the next week. I would like to see it every
day in the folder bag so that children have it available if they are
waiting for daycare bus or waiting for siblings at soccer practice,
      etc.

Sound Out Words: each week on Friday I will send home the words
representing our phonic lessons. They are just for reading practice
but should be easy to spell using the word building lessons from the
      week.

High Frequency Words (Word Wall Words): These are 4-5 words sent home
each Friday for the children to practice, become familiar with and to
use in sentences. They do not need to memorize the spelling since
they represent irregular phonic rules and they will be on the Word
      Wall all year.

Spelling Words: Each Friday I will send home 10 spelling words and one
bonus word. We will have weekly tests the following Friday. Each
child should be ready to spell them IN WRITING by Friday. In
addition, I will be giving 1-3 dictation sentences using as many
spelling words as I can in a "silly sentence" format, to show mastery
of spelling and writing skills. This will be a separate grade from
      the Spelling test.

WE WILL NOT HAVE HOMEWORK "PACKETS" OF WORK EACH WEEK. From time to time, I
may send an additional assignment but I prefer that children practice these
four things: reading, spelling, writing and more reading!
