Summer Reading

May 1, 2008

Dear CMS Dragons,

As you make plans for your summer vacation, we would like you to add reading to your list.  There are so many good books out there just waiting for you to find them.  The Language Arts Department, along with our librarian Mrs. Hall, would like to encourage you to choose at least one suitable novel to read this summer.

We’d like to suggest a few ways to help you in your search.

  • Take a look at the Texas Library Association web site to see the Lone Star Reading List. The books on this list were chosen by a panel of middle school librarians who have read every book on the list. They looked for books that are well written and may appeal to a wide range of readers in grades 6 – 8. We hope some of these Lone Stars appeal to you.

  • Open the American Library Association Young Adult Library Service Association web site to see several lists. YALSA is especially dedicated to meeting the needs of today’s young adults.

    • Best Books for Young Adults offers books recommended for young adult readers.
    • Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers suggests books for people who may not like to read. These books have the potential to grab readers in the very beginning, and maybe hook them into staying.
    • Alex Award books are adult books that may hold particular appeal to young adult readers.

While the selections on the above lists have been made with middle school students in mind, not all books are appropriate for all readers.  Parents, you are the best ones to help your students make decisions about what to read.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer,

        The CMS Language Arts Department
